Italy’s Air Force Rebuilds For The Future
The need to survey activities in North Africa and along the Mediterranean has prompted a reassessment of the air force’s requirements and driven significant investments in its ISR capability.

The service received a pair of Gulfstream G550 business-jet-based conformal airborne early warning (CAEW) aircraft from Israel—along with an observation satellite—in exchange for Israel acquiring 30 M-346 jet trainers from Leonardo. Italy has since decided to purchase eight more G550s for a range of ISR and electronic warfare missions.

The final decision on how the G550s will be configured is pending, but two of the eight are planned to be used as CAEW platforms, for a fleet of four. An undisclosed number are set to be in the Joint Airborne Multisensor Multimission System (JAMMS) configuration for command-and-control and intelligence-gathering missions, and the remainder are to be in a Multisensor Multimission System configuration for standoff jamming.

“This is a very diverse program, so by choosing a single platform, the logistic requirements are lower, the training burden is lower and then you just missionize the platform,” Brig. Gen. Igor Bruni, head of the Italian Air Staff’s Logistics Department, said at the AeroSpace Power Conference.

“ISR and electronic warfare are gaps we are trying to fill,” Ippoliti said. “We also feel we need to increase our airborne early warning, because we believe this capability needs to be increased by all nations.” He noted that Italy’s CAEW will be able to contribute to NATO’s Alliance Future Surveillance and Control capability, due to enter service in 2035.

Italy – Electronic Attack Mission System
The Government of Italy has requested to buy the Electronic Attack (EA)-37B mission system, consisting of the following non-Major Defense Equipment: Network Centric Collaborative Targeting (NCCT) systems; System Control and Monitoring subsystems; Radio Frequency Receiver (RFR) subsystems; Software-defined Radio (SDR) subsystems; Counter Radar Assembly; Array Panels; AN/ARC-210 RT-2036 radios; KG-250 In-line Network Encryptors; KY-100 Narrow/wideband Terminals; KIV-77 Mode 4/5 Identification Friend or Foe (IFF); AN/PYQ-10C Simple Key Loaders; integration and test support and equipment; aircraft support and support equipment; secure communications equipment, precision navigation, and cryptographic devices; major and minor modifications, maintenance, and maintenance support; spare parts, consumables and accessories, and repair and return support; classified and unclassified software delivery and support; classified and unclassified publications and technical documentation; personnel training and training equipment; facilities and construction support; transportation and airlift support; warranties; studies and surveys; U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistics support services; and other related elements of logistics and program support. The estimated total cost is $680 million.
The principal contractor will be BAE Systems, located in Hudson, NH.

  • Umbau in Konfiguration Full Mission Capable
  • Logistischer Support für das Flugzeug (Hardware, Software, Zelle, Triebwerke, APU, Missionssysteme)
  • Ersatz- und Umlaufteile
  • Instandhaltungsleistungen und Obsoleszenzbeseitigung
  • Infrastrukturanpassungen (Hangar, Fliegerwerft, Abstellplätze, klassifizierte Bereiche) am Militärflugplatz Pratica di Mare, inklusive Fertigstellung des Sicherheitsbezirks (Shelter, Satellitenkommunikation, Umzäunung)
  • Projektlaufzeit: 2025-2034
  • Kosten: 638 Mio. EUR
Für den Abschluss der 3. Phase des Projekts, für die insgesamt 1.632,10 Mio. EUR veranschlagt sind (inkl. der oben genannten 638 Mio. EUR), sind folgende noch zu genehmigende Maßnahmen im Umfang von 994,1 Mio. EUR geplant:
  • Modifikation des bestehenden Flugzeugs "Green Base JAMMS" zur Konfiguration Full Mission Capable
  • Logistischer Support
  • Risikovorkehrung für Kostensteigerungen seit dem Jahr 2020 und marktbegründete Unwägbarkeiten
  • Fertigstellung des Sicherheitsbezirks ISTAR, inkl. der eventuellen Errichtung eines Simulatorgebäudes
  • Beschaffung eines Full Motion Simulator für die Familie G550/G650 und Anpassung des bestehenden Missionssystems des Simulators zur Ausbildung von Operatoren
  • Beschaffung eines weiteren Luftfahrzeugs G550/G650 zur Forschungs-, Entwicklungs- und Erprobungstätigkeiten neuer Funktionalitäten zur Unterstützung der nationalen Industrie
