Poland explores loyal wingman options for F-35 fleet
Addressing the International Fighter Conference 2023 in Madrid on 6 November, Maj General Cezary Wisniewski disclosed that the Polish Ministry of National Defence (NMD) was engaged in a comprehensive market assessment of the emerging loyal wingman uncrewed combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) capability. The evaluation has formed part of the ministry's efforts to meet the requirements of the Harpii Szpon (Harpy's Talon) adjunct programme for the F-35 fighters.

‘We are not yet at the point of an acquisition,’ Maj Gen Wisniewski said. ‘We are [now] just waiting for more information to be sure that we don't make a mistake – we just want to join the mainstream approach, [but] we think that industry is not ready to provide the capabilities yet.’

Wisniewski specifically stated that the development of the MQ-28A Ghost Bat from Boeing Australia was being watched closely, alongside the Royal Australian Air Force's (RAAF) loyal wingman procurement and US Air Force's Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) effort.

South Korean loan for Poland arms deal does not exist, says PM
A South Korean loan to Poland to finance arms deals does not actually exist, Poland's prime minister said on Wednesday, although the new government hopes to still continue with the purchases.

"There was a problem with the Korean purchases... a significant part of the Korean purchases was to be financed by a loan that Korea was to grant," Donald Tusk told a news conference.

"In the end it turned out that there was some misunderstanding... it turned out that there was no Korean loan."
Tusk said that Warsaw would review its defence contracts but intended to continue with them.

"I really hope there won't be anything there that would make us revise some of them," he said.

Poland, Italy are unfazed by F-35 upgrade snags
Deliveries of the F-35s for Poland are scheduled to begin in 2024. The Polish Ministry of National Defence says that the deal is on track.

“The implementation of the contract for the purchase of 32 F-35 fighters is proceeding in line with the schedule. The first six of the ordered F-35A aircraft will be delivered to a U.S. air base in the years 2024 to 2025, and they will be used to train Polish pilots,” a spokesperson for the ministry told Defense News.

“The new fighters will arrive to Poland in 2026, and they will continue to be delivered until 2030 in batches of between four and six units per year,” according to the spokesperson.

Meanwhile, as Poland is awaiting the first of its ordered F-35 jets, Warsaw is considering to further expand its combat aircraft fleet with a purchase of 32 additional fighters of a yet undetermined type, as suggested by local defense decision-makers.

Polish Air Force officials have expressed interest in securing air superiority aircraft that could counter Russian Sukhoi Su-34 fighter bombers and Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets. This suggests that the front runners for a potential order would include the Eurofighter Typhoon, produced by a European consortium jointly operated by Airbus, BAE Systems UK, and Italy’s Leonardo, and the F-15EX Eagle II, manufactured by Boeing.

However, a third option could consist of expanding Poland’s F-35 order and purchasing more jets from Lockheed Martin. Recent statements by local government officials indicate that all options are on the table, but budget constraints will affect the final decision.

Poland: We’re ready to host nuclear weapons
Polish President Andrzej Duda said Poland is “ready” to host nuclear weapons on its territory if NATO decides to reinforce its eastern flank.

“Russia is increasingly militarizing the Königsberg oblast (Kaliningrad). Recently, it has been relocating its nuclear weapons to Belarus,” Duda said in an interview published Monday by Polish outlet Fakt.

“If our allies decide to deploy nuclear weapons as part of nuclear sharing on our territory as well, in order to strengthen the security of NATO's eastern flank, we are ready for it,” he added.
Duda said nuclear sharing has been the subject of talks between Poland and the U.S. "for some time."

"I've already talked about it several times. I must admit that when asked about it, I declared our readiness," he said.
