Polish pilots commence FA-50 training in South Korea
Polish Air Force pilots have begun training on the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) FA-50 Fighting Eagle light combat aircraft in South Korea.

Seoul media reported the milestone on 22 February, saying the first cadre of four pilots had been inducted into the Republic of Korea Air Force's (RoKAF's) 1st Fighter Wing in Gwangju. A further four will pass through the 23-week training pipeline before the end of 2023.

The commencement of training came about five months after Warsaw signed for 48 FA-50 aircraft as part of a wider bilateral defence procurement agreement with Seoul in September 2022.

The first 12 FA-50 aircraft, to be designated FA-50PL in Polish service, will be delivered in mid-2023, with the remainder to follow according to an undisclosed timeline. Once in service, the 48 FA-50PLs will augment the Polish Air Force's existing 48 Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Block 50+ Fighting Falcons.

Poland – Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods
The Government of Poland has requested to buy thirty-four (34) AN/AAQ-33 Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods (ATP) with Shipping Containers. Also included are system support and support equipment; spare parts, consumables, accessories, and repair and return support; integration and test equipment and support; unclassified software delivery and support; unclassified Computer Program Identification Number (CPIN) systems; unclassified publications and technical documentation; personnel training and training equipment; U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support services; and other related elements of logistical and program support. The estimated total cost is $124.7 million.
The proposed sale will improve the tactical effectiveness of the FA-50 fighter aircraft that Poland is buying from the Republic of Korea by enhancing its abilities to identify targets, track, and engage from a standoff distance; it will also increase interoperability with U.S. and NATO forces. Poland will have no difficulty absorbing these articles into its armed forces.

Die polnischen FA-50 werden mit dem AESA-Radar Raytheon PhantomStrike ausgestattet:

  • Farnborough 2022: Raytheon PhantomStrike radar ready for export by 2025 (21. Juli 2022)
Speaking to Janes at the Farnborough International Airshow 2022 on 20 July, Eric Ditmars, president of Secure Sensor Solutions, Raytheon Intelligence & Space, said that the company intends to have its radar exportable by 2025, with plans to integrate the system onto specific platforms by the end of 2023 or early 2024.

Ditmars said that the PhantomStrike AESA radar is a compact, low size, weight, and power (SWaP) platform designed for light-attack aircraft, rotary-wing aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and stationary platforms.

It is available in two sizes. The smaller-sized radar weighs approximately 45 kg – half the weight of modern AESA radars, and half the cost of a typical radar – and the medium-sized radar weighs approximately 54 kg, Ditmars added.

It utilises gallium nitride (GaN) power, digital beamforming and steering, digital receiver/exciter, a processor called Chirp, which has been developed by the Raytheon Missiles & Defense business, and an air-cooled design, he said.

The Chirp has undergone thermal testing, where it has followed the modelling perfectly.

He did not divulge the specific range of the radar. However, he said that the small array has a range that is equal to the F-16, while the medium array can outperform the F-16.

He said that the French military have expressed an interest in the system and are interested in installing the radar on their Mirage aircraft.

After the flight test by the end of July, FA-50GF will be provided starting in August. The first 12 FA-50GFs are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2023.
According to the contract, KAI is scheduled to consecutively provide 36 FA-50PLs (Poland) out of the maximum contract number of 48 between the 2nd half of 2025 and 2028, which is the upgraded version of FA-50 with the highest level of specifications by reflecting the needs and the requests from the Polish Air Force.

FA-50PL is upgraded with overall functions by extending its range through the aerial refueling function and enhancing the active electronically scanned array (AESA), and air-to-surface and air-to-air weapons, which is expected to contribute to develop the Air Force of Poland.
