Rheinmetall und Elbit Systems haben erfolgreich eine automatisierte Radhaubitze 155mm L52 im scharfen Schuss vorgestellt. Die Vorführung des neuen Systems fand Anfang März 2023 auf dem Schießplatz Shivta im Süden Israels statt. Dabei waren hochrangige Gäste der britischen, deutschen, niederländischen und ungarischen Streitkräfte anwesend.

Hungary rebuilds tank forces

Hungarian forces have received a company of 12 Leopard 2A4 tanks that will be used to train crews and technicians as the country undertakes efforts to switch its MBT fleet from the T-72 to the Leopard 2. The initial 12 Leopard 2A4s will serve as a bridge between the T-72 and the more advanced Leopard 2A7HU that will begin to arrive from 2023 onwards. Forty-four vehicles are on order from Rheinmetall.

Brig Gen Lőrincz said that the tank force will be propelled from using adequate late-Cold War technology to modern systems, which presents immense challenges in training crews and maintainers. The Hungarians are also ordering support vehicles such as armoured recovery vehicles and armoured vehicle-launched bridge platforms, all based on the Leopard 2.

Another challenge is that of national infrastructure - roadways and bridges may need upgrading to support the weight of the new vehicles when in transit. Firing ranges used earlier by the T-72 will need to be upgraded to provide a challenging training environment, and a local stockpile of 120 mm smoothbore ammunition is also desired.

Nach der PzH2000 will das ungarische Verteidigungsministerium Mehrfachraketenwerfer beschaffen. Diesem Artikel auf der Website Szabad Európa zufolge, haben mehrere Quellen, die im Verteidigungsministerium beschäftigt sind bzw. waren, mitgeteilt, dass der Kauf von HIMARS diskutiert wurde:

Hungary responds after US senator says he blocked HIMARS purchase

The Hungarian government has said it abandoned plans to order High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems after last year’s bilateral talks failed to produce an agreement with the United States.

“During the previous government term, the government commissioner responsible for [weapon] procurements requested information regarding the HIMARS missile systems in a letter, with a deadline of March 2022. There was no response from the American side, and the ministry considered the matter closed,” Hungary’s Defence Ministry said in a statement recently published by the state-run MTI news agency.

The statement was referring to the previous cabinet of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who formed his fifth consecutive government in May 2022 and has served in the position since 2010.

Earlier this week, U.S. Sen. James Risch of Idaho said he had blocked the sale of 24 HIMARS weapons to Hungary.

Speaking to The Washington Post, Risch explained he halted the potential $735 million deal with Hungary due to its government’s refusal to agree to Sweden’s accession to NATO. The lawmaker is the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The contract was to cover 24 launchers along with more than 100 missiles, among other related gear and services.
