Estnische Streitkräfte erhalten Loitering Munitions

Estonia to acquire loitering munitions (18. Februar 2023)
Estonia will acquire a significant quantity of loitering munitions in the near future, in order to significantly increase its indirect fire capability as a consequence of Russian aggression.
With the procurement to be implemented in the near future, the Defence Forces will have the ability to attack the enemy with loitering munitions from a greater distance, Pevkur said.

Indirect fire is firing at a target that the gunner cannot see. Used to accomplish this are, for example, mortars, artillery, multiple rocket launchers, or loitering munitions. One of the combat objectives of indirect fire capability is to attack the enemy’s own indirect fire units.

According to Pevkur, it is one of Estonia’s largest defence procurements, but it would not be prudent to specify the exact amount due to the pending status of the procurement.

Procurement of the systems is nearing completion. A comprehensive market survey was organised last year, an agreement will be concluded in the first quarter of this year, and the lion’s share of deliveries will reach Estonia in 2024.

The indirect fire capability of the Defence Forces is provided by mortars of various calibres as part of manoeuvre units, both infantry brigades have an artillery battalion, and in 2024–2025, a multiple-launch rocket and loitering munitions unit (air assault battery) will be created.

Estonia has signed a contract with Israel Aerospace Industries to acquire long-range loitering munitions
The Republic of Estonia has signed an agreement with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to procure advanced long-range loitering munitions, making it the one of the most expensive defense procurement Estonia has ever made.
The Estonian Defence Forces' indirect fire capability is provided by various caliber mortars in the composition of maneuver units and self-propelled howitzers in divisional composition. In 2024-2025, multiple rocket launchers and long-range loitering munitions units will also be created within the Defence Forces.

Prior to the procurement of stealth air-launched munitions, a thorough market research was conducted to find the most suitable solution for the defense forces' needs. Estonia's order focused primarily on achieving long-range offensive capabilities. Criteria included precision, munition robustness, and wide-ranging simultaneous offensive capability.
The first deliveries are expected to arrive in 2024, with the necessary training provided to the Defence Forces before deployment. The Defense Forces will be ready to use the systems as soon as they arrive.

Estonia orders long-range loitering munitions from IAI
An ECDI spokesperson told Janes on 5 May that the contract is valued at over EUR100 million (USD110 million), declining to give the exact amount.

The IAI sent a press release with photos of its Mini Harpy and Harop loitering munitions, and ECDI's photos from the signing of the contract included a mock-up of a Mini Harpy at the ceremony. However, the spokesperson only stated that the ECDI is acquiring “products from the IAI family of loitering munitions… We cannot specify the quantities of the ammunition to be procured”.
