Airbus anticipates future Eurofighter buy from Spain
Airbus is confident that Spain will order further Eurofighter (C.16 in national service) combat aircraft, in addition to the Project Halcon jets contracted earlier in 2022.

Speaking in Madrid in mid-December, Jean-Brice Dumont, head of Military Air Systems, said that, with the Spanish Air Force (Ejército del Aire Español: EdAE) having signed for Tranche 4 jets under Project Halcon in June, a follow-on buy of either Tranche 4 or Tranche 5 Eurofighters is expected.

As a consortium partner country, Spain currently fields 70 Tranche 1 to Tranche 3 Eurofighters, with a further 20 Tranche 4 aircraft to be received under Project Halcon. With the EdAE looking to replace all of its Boeing EF-18 Hornet (C.15) aircraft in the coming years, it has a requirement for as many as 60 new aircraft (assuming a 1:1 replacement) that could be fully or partially satisfied with Tranche 4 or Tranche 5 Eurofighters, depending on the procurement timeline.

Upgrade and retention of Tranche 1 Eurofighters ‘technically feasible', BAE Systems tells UK Parliament

AVP0021 - Aviation Procurement

  • Upgrading the RAF’s Tranche 1 Typhoon fleet

It is technically feasible to bring a Tranche 1 (T1) aircraft to the standard of a Tranche 2 (T2) or Tranche 3 (T3) aircraft. BAE Systems has previously provided data to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) that outlines the scope of structural and avionic modifications that would be required. BAE Systems has not been asked to provide an assessment of the non-recurring design effort, nor associated costs, to implement such an upgrade. However, Spain has embarked upon a similar programme with some degree of concurrency available through multiple modification lines.

Other Typhoon partner nations have also reviewed their fleets – Germany has concluded that it will retire its T1 aircraft, but will purchase more aircraft under the Quadriga programme in order to maintain combat fleet numbers. Italy are reportedly considering acquiring new Typhoons, in response to the retirement of Tornado, and potentially to replace their Tranche 1 fleet.

It is worth nothing that there are some fundamental differences in the avionic equipment and in some areas of the aircraft structure between the T1 aircraft and those in the RAF’s T2 and T3 fleet. In addition, whilst the T2 and T3 aircraft share the same avionic equipment, there are structural differences between the T2 and T3 build standards, with the T3s already provisioned to accommodate the weight, power and cooling requirements of the RAF’s Mk2 ECRS radar.

EUROFIGHTER, NETMA AND EUROJET SIGN HALCON CONTRACT FOR NEW EUROFIGHTER TYPHOONS
The Halcón agreement, announced at the ILA air show in Berlin, will see Spain receive 16 single-seater and 4 twin-seater fighters equipped with electronic (e-scan) radar which will replace part of the legacy F-18 fleet. It will increase the Spanish Eurofighter fleet to 90 aircraft.

The aircraft, as with those in the German Quadriga programme signed in 2020, will also be equipped with future-proofed hardware, software, and an even broader multi-role capability for engaging air and ground targets.
The first Halcón aircraft will be delivered in 2026 and the new aircraft will secure industrial activity until 2030. With a service life well beyond 2060, the Eurofighter Typhoon’s technical capabilities will allow full integration into the Europe’s future air combat environment.
