PLAAF's new H-6N bomber seen carrying large missile

Bild
Video footage has emerged showing for the first time a People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) Xian Aircraft Corporation (XAC) H-6N strategic bomber carrying a large weapon under its fuselage that appears to be an air-launched ballistic missile (ALBM) fitted with a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV).

The footage, which was first posted on the Weibo social media platform on 17 October by what appeared to be an aircraft spotter, shows the bomber during its final approach to an airbase at an undisclosed location.

The H-6N made its first public appearance in a fly-past for China’s National Day Parade on 1 October 2019. At the time the aircraft was shown armed with two CJ-10K/KD-20 and two KD-63 land attack cruise missiles. The bomber is readily distinguishable from other H-6 variants as it is fitted with an aerial refuelling probe above the nose radome. Less obvious are the modifications under the fuselage, which include a reshaped section in place of the bomb bay doors, enabling it to carry a large external weapon using centreline hard-point mountings.

The H-6N is believed to have entered PLAAF service in late 2018 and been assigned to a new bomber unit under the PLA’s Central Theatre Command.

Chinese H-6N appears with mysterious ballistic missile
A brief video has emerged of a Xian H-6N bomber carrying what could be a ballistic missile or boost-glide vehicle along its centreline.

The video appeared on the Chinese internet on 17 October. It goes some way to confirming a long-held theory that one mission for the H-6N, the most advanced variant of the H-6 family, is lofting ballistic missiles.
Since the H-6N’s appearance in Beijing’s military parade on 1 October 2019, observers have commented on the concavity that replaces the bomb bay seen on previous variants of the H-6. Speculation held that it is designed to carry a single DF-21 anti-ship ballistic missile, or perhaps a hypersonic vehicle of some type, and potentially the DF-17, which appeared on a wheeled launcher during the parade.

The brevity and quality of the video make it difficult to ascertain what, exactly, the H-6N was carrying. One on-line commentator from China posited that the weapon in the footage is somewhat longer than the DF-21.

The weapon could be a straight-up ballistic missile intended to carry a conventional warhead, or potentially a boost-glide hypersonic vehicle, which would give it improved range. Equipped with a nuclear warhead, a boost-glide hypersonic weapon deployed from an H-6N could hold very distant targets at risk.

Roderick Lee, research director at the China Aerospace Studies Institute, tweeted that the airfield in the video could be the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) base at Neixiang. In a recent story he wrote for The Diplomat, Lee said that satellite imagery suggests that Neixiang airfield in Henan Province has been extensively upgraded to support H-6Ns performing a nuclear mission.

The H-6N certainly has the Pentagon’s attention. In its annual report to congress about China in early September, it had this to say about the new variant: “The H-6N features a modified fuselage that allows it to carry externally either a drone or an air-launched ballistic missile [ALBM] that may be nuclear capable. The H-6N’s air-to-air refueling capability also provides it greater reach over other H-6 variants that are not refuelable in air.”

Airshow China 2022: China reveals new ALBM for H-6K bombers
China has unveiled a new air-launched ballistic missile (ALBM) for use by the People's Liberation Army's (PLA's) H-6K bomber fleet.

Two of the new missiles were carried by a Xi'an Aircraft Company (XAC) H-6K bomber, which arrived in Zhuhai, in South China's Guangdong Province, on 3 November for participating in Airshow China 2022. The exhibition is scheduled to be held from 8 to 13 November.

Imagery of the H-6K bomber shows the missile loaded on the centre pylons. Janes assesses that the projectile is an air-launched hypersonic missile. The weapons system appears to be similar to the Russian Kh‐47M2 Kinzhal (AS-24 ‘Killjoy') ALBM.

However, the new Chinese missile has a sleeker nose section, an aerodynamic body with a different control tailfins design, and a change in the position of the launching lugs.

  • 2022 Report on Military and Security Developments Involving the People's Republic of China
During the PRC’s 70 th anniversary parade in 2019, the PLAAF publicly revealed the H-6N, a derivative of the H-6K optimized for long-range strikes. The H-6N features a modified fuselage that allows it to carry externally an air-launched ballistic missile (ALBM) that may be nuclear capable. In October 2020, an H-6N was observed carrying an air-launched ballistic missile.
Hypersonic Weapons. China’s deployment of the DF-17 HGV-armed MRBM will continue to transform the PLA’s missile force. The system, fielded in 2020, is possibly intended to replace some older SRBM units, according to PRC media, and is intended to strike foreign military bases and fleets in the Western Pacific, according to a PRC-based military expert.
Hypersonics and Fractional Orbital Bombardment. The PRC is probably developing advanced nuclear delivery systems such as a strategic hypersonic glide vehicle and a fractional orbital bombardment (FOB) system in part due to long-term concerns about United States missile defense capabilities, as well as to attain qualitative parity with future worldwide missile capabilities. On July 27th , 2021, the PRC conducted a test of an ICBM-range hypersonic glide vehicle that travelled 40,000 kilometers. The test likely demonstrated the PRC’s technical ability to field a FOB system.
China conducted a test of a new hypersonic weapon system in 2021, building on previous progress in hypersonic weapon development. In 2020, China fielded its first missile with a hypersonic glide vehicle and advanced its scramjet engine development, which has applications in hypersonic cruise missiles. In 2021 and 2022, China conducted flight tests of a reusable suborbital vehicle believed to be part of a plan to build a hypersonic transport system that could take people and cargo anywhere on Earth in less than an hour. According to the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), this system will “feature winged aircraft that take off and land like ordinary aircraft, but cruise at five times the speed of sound at high altitude.”
