Patria
2021 Annual Report

The key project is FAMOUS (European Future Highly Mobile Augmented Armoured Systems), which involves nine EU countries, including Finland. Patria heads up an extensive European industrial group assembled for this project. It includes 19 leading defence companies from different EU countries.

In Finland, FAMOUS focuses on developing the Arctic mobility of the Finnish Army. The aim is to find a vehicle solution to replace the current ageing fleet of tracked transport vehicles, which will be decommissioned.

Joint EU project led by Finland develops the Finnish Army’s arctic mobility
The European Commission has granted approximately EUR 95 million in funding from the European Defence Fund (EDF) to an industrial consortium that is developing future vehicle solutions for the ground forces of nine European countries.

Finland, Belgium, Denmark, Latvia, Norway, France, Austria, Greece and Spain signed a letter of intent on the development of next-generation armoured vehicles in December 2021. Led by Finland, the signatories to the letter of intent supported the project proposal of the joint European industrial consortium (FAMOUS 2, European Future Highly Mobile Augmented Armoured Systems 2). The aim of the project proposal is to improve the performance of new and existing armoured vehicles. Led by Patria, the industrial consortium includes a total of 18 European companies.
The funding now awarded, and additional national funding granted by the participating countries, will be used to continue the project into its next phase, which will include the design and development of the actual vehicles and vehicle systems.

The areas of technology being developed are related to, for example, mobility, energy production, protection, improved situational awareness, autonomy, weapons system development, and improved maintainability.

In Finland, the project is connected to the development of the Finnish Army’s arctic mobility in a project seeking a new vehicle solution to replace the existing fleet of all-terrain vehicles that is becoming obsolete and will be decommissioned. The results of the ongoing feasibility study will be used to create a vehicle concept that will be developed into a prototype with the help of the funding that has now been awarded.

#GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas, as part of the #COMMANDS project, was awarded by the European Commission to answer the #EDF-2021 call #UGVT: Unmanned Ground Vehicle Technologies. The #COMMANDS project aims at developing Through Life Capabilities (#TLC) for agile, intelligent and cooperative manned and unmanned land systems, that will ensure early de-risking as well as potential early exploitation of technologies. As land systems OEM, #GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas will contribute in all phases of the project, from the early studies and requirements definition up to the Technology Demonstrator Program including both a Laboratory Demonstrator and a real scenario Mobile Demonstrator centered around the use case of a Last Kilometer Re-supply Convoy with Force Protection. #COMMANDS is developed in the context of the PESCO project #iUGS, and as such is strongly aligned with the #EU Ground Combat Capability Development Plan. We are thrilled to embark on this exciting journey!

The #ELUVAT project launched last week!

It will focus on designing an innovative electric light utility all-terrain vehicle for defence purposes.

A legacy military vehicle, the Mercedes G, will get an upgrade by introducing an advanced electrified powertrain with #inwheel electric motors and advanced multiple wheel traction control.

It will further demonstrate the reliability of in-wheel and multiple-wheel-drive EV solutions.

If you have been following our Throwback Thursday #TBT, you could already see that our technology has been evaluated on vast vehicle types – including all-terrain vehicles (such as Steinbock, Mattro Ardrenner and others).

The vehicle will test different options of the power source for the electrified powertrain: a hybrid internal combustion engine, a battery pack and a Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cell.

Organisations from 5 EU countries will contribute, while #Slovenia is the lead contributing Member State, involving Univerza v Ljubljani / University of Ljubljana, AVL-AST and Elaphe.

Austria, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands are contributors too: the Austrian AVL List as project leader, the German AVL Schrick, the Swiss GDELS-Mowag, HyMove B.V. and Saluqi Motors from The Netherlands.

#ELUVAT | New EDA research and technology project on all-terrain electrical light utility vehicle.

The ELUVAT - Innovative electric light utility all-terrain vehicle for defence purposes - project, involves the development of an all-terrain electrical light utility vehicle based on an existing legacy vehicle with a conventional driveline. This legacy vehicle will get modified by introducing an advanced electrified powertrain with in-wheel electric motors. ELUVAT involves Slovenia (lead), Austria, Germany and The Netherlands as contributing Member States and Switzerland.

In the first phase [ELUVAT I] the concept will be developed and validated through simulation, which will cover space claim, weight, and performance issues, and compare the new powertrain with the conventional powertrain. Different options as the power source for the electrified powertrain will be considered: a dedicated hybrid internal combustion engine, a battery pack and a Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell to be operated by hydrogen. In a second phase [ELUVAT II], a full demonstrator will be developed.

The project also supports EU goals on energy efficiency and lowering the carbon footprint in the defence domain and is consistent with EU strategy on hydrogen, while also providing an opportunity for the development of dual use applications.

The kick-off meeting, held on 3 February, has officially started the first phase of the project that involves Slovenia, as lead contributing Member State, Austria, Germany and The Netherlands as contributing Member States and Switzerland, as contributing Third State, under the Administrative Arrangement between the Agency and the Swiss Confederation. ELUVAT is prepared in the CapTech Ground Systems at EDA’s Research and Innovation Directorate.

The project will be executed by a consortium composed of eight industrial and research entities: the Austrian AVL List as project leader, the German AVL Schrick, the Swiss GDELS-Mowag, HyMove and Saluqi Motors from The Netherland and AVL-AST, Elaphe Propulsion Technology and University of Ljubljana from Slovenia.

John Cockerill selected for the European FAMOUS 2, MARSEUS and INDY programmes

https://johncockerill.com/en/press-and- ... s-et-indy/
FAMOUS2 builds on the ongoing FAMOUS project, launched in 2020 under the European
Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP). It follows on from the vehicle and system
concept development activities carried out under this seminal project.

In this project, John Cockerill Defense takes a major role in the consortium coordinated by the
Finnish partner Patria. John Cockerill Defense will coordinate all activities related to the
development of medium calibre weapon systems to provide firepower for future tracked all-
terrain vehicles and light wheeled armoured vehicles.

The weapon system development will be done in partnership with Patria, Nexter, Kongsberg,
ISD and Escribano. John Cockerill Defense will also contribute to the development of protection,
camouflage and environmental understanding solutions that will enable the implementation of
recently developed innovations.

The MARSEUS (Modular Architecture Solutions for EU States) programme is the second part
of the LynkEUS project, which is coming to an end, and aims to study the firing beyond line of
sight of a 5th generation medium-range anti-tank missile, embarked on a vehicle in coordination
with an observation drone.

MARSEUS, under the coordination of the French company MBDA, will develop the collaborative
capability for this "beyond line of sight" firing capability over a 3-year period. John Cockerill
Defense's role will be to integrate these new functionalities into our latest generation compact
turrets, the Cockerill® CPWS and 1030.

Finally, John Cockerill will also participate in the INDY programme, which aims to develop
solutions for the energy independence of military camps deployed in operations, such as
hydrogen and micro-grid management.
