Serbian MoD develops armed version of Vrabac small UAV

Bild
A prototype armed version of the Vrabac (Sparrow) small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was unveiled during a display of domestic defence equipment held by the Serbian Armed Forces at the Military Academy in Belgrade.

Speaking at the event on 15 August, Nenad Miloradović, assistant minister of defence for material resources in the Serbian Ministry of Defence (MoD), told attendees that the armed Vrabac can carry up to six grenades that have an effective range of five metres, and a delayed-action fuze that triggers once the grenade rebounds to a height of 1.5 m after initial impact.

The prototype on display featured two small underwing pylons, each carrying three M22 40 mm grenades of two types – bounding high-explosive (HE) anti-personnel fragmentation (PFT) and bounding HE anti-armour fragmentation (PFTK).

According to Miloradović, the development of the armed Vrabac is being led by the MoD's Military Technical Institute (Vojnotehnički Institut).

Serbia may become biggest operator of military drones in Balkans
Amid rising tensions with Kosovo, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić's recent order to shoot down all UAVs found in no-fly zones and near military facilities, Iranian officials suggested that Serbia made a formal bid to purchase that country’s drones.

If true, the purchase could make Belgrade the largest military drone operator in the Balkans.
While the country has openly stated its interest in acquiring Turkish TB2 drones multiple times in the past, these plans might be halted after unconfirmed claims were made by Iranian Major General Yahia Rahim Safavi stating that Belgrade is one of 22 countries to have filed a formal bid to buy Iranian UAVs.

On this, Peter Voinovich, editor-in-chief of Serbian aviation news portal TangoSix is not convinced, stating that the country “has significant capabilities both in engineering and manufacturing (as it produces a lot of composite aircraft in the civilian aviation sector) to cater to its own needs that there is really little Iran could possibly provide it with in terms of either finished UAV products or in know-how.”

President Vučić in Abu Dhabi: We will continue to invest in our armed forces and defence industry
He said that another reason for his coming to the defence exhibition was to buy drones which would arrive in Serbia by the end of the year.

- We are buying killer drones and signing contracts soon, in the next few days. We expect them to arrive in our country by the end of the year, said the president, stressing the importance of “Noras” and the new weapon "Aleksandar", named after King Aleksandar.
- We are buying 109 "Miloš" AFVs, 39 "Lazar" fighting vehicles, we are modernizing 26 tanks, 26 BRDMs, 12 "Gvozdikas", we are working on rocket artillery - eight modular and 12 digital “Oganj” rocket launchers. We are buying all of that and the Serbian Armed Forces must receive all that by September 2024, President Vučić said.
