Lithuania accelerates rocket artillery buy amid Russian military buildup
The Lithuanian government has decided to accelerate its planned purchase of a multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) amid Russia’s military buildup on its border with Ukraine.

The decision to buy the system in 2026, two years earlier than Vilnius previously planned, was taken by the State Defence Council, a body that comprises Lithuania’s president, prime minister, defense minister, parliament speaker, and the chief of defense.

“The State Defence Council agrees that, in the face of current security threats, the Lithuanian Army needs [an] increased number of conscripts [and a] further deployment of capabilities. We intend to engage in a joint development of [a] regional interoperable Multiple Launch Rocket System capability,” Lithuanian Defence Minister Arvydas Anušauskas said in a tweet.

Local observers say the ministry plans to order Lockheed Martin’s M270 MLRS.

Last December, Anušauskas and his two counterparts, Estonia’s Defense Minister Kalle Laanet and Latvian Defense Minister Artis Pabriks, agreed that the three Baltic states will all acquire MLRS for their respective militaries.

Estonia purchases six HIMARS multiple rocket launcher systems from USA
On Friday, Magnus-Valdemar Saar, Director General of the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI), signed a contract with the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) for the procurement of the HIMARS multiple rocket launcher systems, which is an important capacity boost in the development of Estonia’s indirect fire capability. Weapon systems are purchasing from United States of America and the manufacturer of the weapon system is Lockheed Martin. The total value of the contract is more than 200 million dollars.
This is Estonia’s largest ever arms procurement project. ‘As part of the contract, in addition to the weapon system, Estonia will also procure ammunition, communications solutions, as well as training, logistics, and life-cycle solutions. The package includes rockets with different effects, ranging from 70 to 300 kilometres,’ Ramil Lipp, the Armament Category Manager of the ECDI, added.
The first deliveries will take place in 2024.

New capability at the Lithuanian Armed Forces: contract signed with the U.S. on procurement of HIMARS High Mobility Artillery Rocket System
Meeting with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III on December 15 Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas underscored the particularly significant importance the newly concluded contract on acquisition of High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) had for Lithuania’s national defence.
The signed M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) acquisition contract covers procurement of 8 launchers with live and blank ammunition including different types and combat characteristic guided missile pods, for example, the ATACMS Army Tactical Missile Systems with the effective range of 300 km. Lithuania also procures training and system maintenance equipment, services for personnel training, system integration and connection with the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS).

The deal is assessed to be worth approx. USD 495 million. The U.S. Government will place the order with the principal sale contractor, U.S. company Lockheed Martin.
