Farnborough 2018: Swedish Air Force outline air defence wish list
Speaking to delegates at a pre-Farnborough briefing, Maj Gen Mats Helgesson, chief of Swedish Air Force, outlined how the force is seeking to ‘maintain a strategic aim to where we are going’.
Whilst the Gripen is the foundation of the air force’s air defence operations, it seems the future of the air force is gravitating towards unmanned systems by the mid-2030s. However, he said: ‘We are operating the Charlie and Delta versions of the Gripen and they are the backbone of the Swedish Air Force.
'At the same time, we are developing the Echo version; it will be become the backbone of the air force in the mid-2020s and take over the role as our country’s air defender. But we know somewhere down the road, we will need something beyond that,' he said.

Latest Gripen news from the Farnborough International Airshow
Saab’s Gripen E programme continues to make progress. The Gripen aircraft with designation 39-8 has conducted a number of successful flights carrying external stores, including pylons from the Swiss company RUAG Aerostructures.
The two aircraft (known as 39-9 and 39-10) benefited by having new and upgraded computers rapidly added to them, further improving the capabilities from the first aircraft, 39-8.
Jonas Hjelm also revealed that during July, Gripen E has undertaken its first flight equipped with an IRIS-T air to air missile on each wingtip, and four pylons under the wings and the centre pylon on the fuselage.
The flight included several test maneuvers at supersonic speed. This took place over the Baltic Sea and paves the way for future trials involving carriage and release of missiles, drop tanks and other external stores.
Gripen E is an international programme and there has been progress with the design of Gripen F, the two seat version. This is being designed with Embraer in Brazil and can be used for training, Combat Readiness training, Combat Missions and Electronic Warfare Officer, Mission Commander and Weapon System Officer in the rear seat. Additional highlights have been further deliveries around key hardware such as the Wide Area Display being led by the Brazilian company AEL Aeker. Gripen E is being developed for the Swedish Air Force whilst the Brazilian Air Force will receive both Gripen E and F.

Saab Launches Next Generation Anti-ship Missile System RBS15 Gungnir
Today, Saab announces the RBS15 Gungnir next generation anti-ship missile system that is being shown at the Farnborough International Airshow 2018 for the first time.
“RBS15 Gungnir is offered in both air-launched and surface-launched configurations that offer greatly improved capabilities, compared to other missile systems on the market. With an improved range to more than 300 km and highly advanced target seeker, it gives the capability to engage any target, in all conditions,” says Görgen Johansson, Senior Vice President and head of Saab business area Dynamics.
Whilst RBS15 Mk3 delivers the capabilities that forces require today, the RBS15 Gungnir also integrates with pre-existing RBS15 infrastructure to fulfil tomorrow’s defence requirements. The system is backwards compatible, so an investment in Mk3 today opens a smooth path to transition into Gungnir tomorrow.
The next generation version of the RBS15 development and production programme was first contracted in March 2017 with the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV). This next generation of RBS15 systems is named Gungnir. That March 2017 contract amounted to SEK 3.2 billion with deliveries to take place during the period 2017-2026. Additional production of missiles was contracted with FMV in April 2017 for MSEK 500, with deliveries to begin in the mid-2020s.
The RBS15 missile family is jointly produced by Saab and Diehl Defence GmbH & Co. KG and serves with various navies, coastal batteries and air forces from Sweden, Finland, Germany, Poland, Croatia, Thailand and an undisclosed country.
RBS15 Gungnir is the system level name whilst in the air-launched configuration the missile is called the RBS15 Mk4 Air.
