Systematic unveils latest dismounted C2 system: SitaWare Edge 2.0
SitaWare Edge 2.0 introduces a new mapping engine – the same as that employed in SitaWare Headquarters – that offers full 3-D capabilities and supports a range of geospatial analysis tools, as well as aligning symbology across the suite.
Further features include an integrated chat function – enabling the map interface to remain on-screen at all times – and the ability to hand sketch on the screen.

SitaWare Edge 2.0’s responsive design optimises user interaction on Android mobile and tablet devices, with menus and tools adjusting according to screen orientation and resolution. It also features light and dark display modes to meet tactical needs, and is designed to function with or without gloves.
The standards-based design also permits interoperation with non-SitaWare users, the software is able to share key information – such as positional data – with other systems.

SitaWare Edge 2.0 is in the early stages of fielding with several experienced SitaWare users, providing Systematic with important operational feedback. Amongst these is the Slovenian Army, a long-standing user of the SitaWare suite that has recently carried out trials using SitaWare Edge 2.0 to support civil authorities.

EDA readies GOSSRA soldier modernisation pitch to NATO

Bild
The European Defence Agency (EDA) is to hand over proposals for its Generic Open Soldier System Reference Architecture (GOSSRA) to NATO in May, as the alliance considers adopting it as a standardisation recommendation (STAREC).

The EUR1.5 million (USD1.62 million) multinational GOSSRA project, which was launched in 2018 by the European Union under the Preparatory Action on Defence Research (PADR) scheme, featured a consortium led by Rheinmetall Electronics (Germany) that also included GMV (Spain), iTTi (Poland), Tekever-ASDS (Portugal), Larimart (Italy), Leonardo (Italy), SAAB (Sweden), Indra (Spain), and TNO (the Netherlands).

The project was initiated to develop a common reference architecture covering software, electronics, voice and data communication, sensors, effectors, human interface devices, and C4i in support of soldier modernisation programmes.
Project officials told Jane’s that GOSSRA formally concluded at the end of April. Findings are to be delivered to the NATO Land Capability Group on Dismounted Soldier Systems in May.

The GOSSRA study culminated in a final demonstration conducted near Madrid on 20 February, comprising a live exercise that showcased the interoperability of soldier systems from EU countries such as Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Designed around a ‘loaned radio concept’, the demonstration featured Leonardo S-wave handheld secure wideband soldier radios and included a force protection scenario in which an enemy sniper and suspicious vehicle were observed by coalition forces.

The overall system of anti-personnel weapons of the infantry entered a full replacement phase two years ago. The replacement of the well-known FAMAS (assault rifle built by the St Etienne armory) by the HK416 France has been the first step. It is going on this year with the replacement of the PA automatic pistol by the PSA semi-automatic pistol, the replacement of the manually operated precision rifle FRF2 by the FPSA gas operated precision rifle and the delivery of the smooth bore 12 cal rifle. It will be continued. with the replacement of the light machine guns and the possible development of a high accuracy (FHP) rifle for the long-range snipers
In this respect, the French infantry is a step ahead of its allied comrades since it benefits from the lessons learned from the deployment of the FELIN (Future Soldier Technology) system, whereas all other modern armies have given up their future combatant programs, resumed them again and are almost ten years behind France. In fact, the failures as well as the successes of the FELIN system allowed to gather a significant amount of lessons learned from the whole program and especially about the weapons of the infantryman.
The lessons learned from the FELIN system and the analysis of the current conflicts lead to reassess the marksmanship requirements of the modern infantryman. The shooter to-morrow will need an all-round, day and night compact and light sight without any complex weapon handling (optic sight change, cable connection). He must be able to operate all necessary functions for “duel” situations at up to 400 m, either mobile or stationary, and still hold his weapon with his strong hand. This requires him to be able to shoot under any conditions and circumstances, even with extreme and sudden luminosity changes.
We have in fact to make a choice between the essential and the necessary. A narrow field which allows to acquire a target at up to 600 m and to make a picture may be useful (although it is questionable for the picture) but it is not essential. When you have to win a duel alone in the confrontation on the battlefield and expose your life, only the essential counts.

This future weapon scope will have to offer both the qualities of the EOTECH and the performances of the LI/IR sensors, the whole being merged in only one modular package with a maximum weigh of 700 g. We will have thus to choose between the usefulness and the necessity. The prevailing need orients toward the IR, since it can be employed whatever the light conditions. Of course, LI remains a requirement but it can be met by the employment of night goggles for shooting. This drive toward the essential is seriously straining the current studies.
The technologies derived from the digitization currently enable to merge the products of various sensors on the same prismatic Picture and thus fix both the problems of the scene effect and of the lone screen. The infantry development unit carefully monitors all These evolutions which could lead to a very compact hybrid product with an EOTECH-type optical sight and a FELIN IR scope which would be compatible with the night goggles. Long range shooting could be secured by a flip-on magnification scope.

Such a product, the IR module of STEINER, has been disclosed for the first time, at a show at the end of 2019. It requires improvements since the performances are still basic, but the idea wins impetus. This kind of simple, useful, light and compact product could be mounted on the HK416 F of the infantryman in the near future.

Elitac Wearables delivers first Mission Navigation Belt order to Royal Netherlands Army
Utrecht, The Netherlands, 6 July, 2020 — Elitac Wearables B.V. announced today that it has delivered the first order of Mission Navigation Belts to the Royal Netherlands Army. The Mission Navigation Belt (MNB) allows soldiers to feel waypoint navigation directions through small, quiet vibration motors, located in a lightweight belt worn around the waist.
Traditional navigation compromises situational awareness because it requires soldiers to take their focus away from their surroundings to check screens or maps, or listen to audio instructions. The Mission Navigation Belt solves this problem by conveying navigation cues through haptic feedback and the underutilised sense of touch. This way, it frees up soldiers’ hands, eyes and ears to concentrate on their surroundings.

What is the Mission Navigation Belt?

The Mission Navigation Belt (MNB) is designed for hands-free and intuitive haptic navigation for soldiers in the field. It provides fast information flow and increases agility through haptic sense, simultaneously reducing the load on hands, eyes and ears.

Background Information

The MNB is developed by Elitac in close cooperation with the NL Ministry of Defense as part of the new and innovative soldier’s soldier system (VOSS). Currently the belts are being tested by the NL Ministry of Defense and will be commercially available in the course of 2020.
