Some 181 MBTs should be submitted to an upgrade programme that will include a new 1,500 hp engine (versus the current 1,300 hp) improved optronics and C2 elements, the adoption of an RCWS over the turret, and additional underbelly protections against mines and IEDs. The upgrade should start in 2019, providing sufficient funds will be available and priorities will not be modified.
Protezione delle Forze e Capacità di Ingaggio. Tali Capacità fondamentali prevedono le seguenti linee di sviluppo che afferiscono a:

Mobilità terrestre. Lo Strumento militare richiede forze leggere (tipo piattaforma VTLM Lince), medie (tipo piattaforma VBM Freccia e Blindo centauro II) e pesanti (tipo carro Ariete e VCC Dardo) in grado di assicurare elevati standard di protezione e precisione d’ingaggio in un contesto digitalizzato. Pertanto, mentre proseguiranno le acquisizioni dei mezzi necessari al completamento delle dotazioni, dovranno essere previsti interventi mirati nel segmento pesante, attualmente non in grado di garantire gli auspicati livelli qualitativi. Parimenti anche il segmento di supporto al combattimento dovrà essere reso adeguato alle unità di manovra cui fornisce supporto.
CARRO ARMATO “ARIETE” (Ammodernamento)
DESCRIZIONE
Il programma prevede, a partire da un esemplare di carro armato “Ariete” tra quelli attualmente in inventario, la realizzazione di un prototipo ammodernato in termini di protezione, sorveglianza e scoperta, comando e controllo, mobilità e sostenibilità logistica.
La realizzazione di tale prototipo funzionale a valutare l’opportunità dell’avvio di una fase successiva d’ammodernamento della linea carri “Ariete” dell’Esercito Italiano.
STATO E VOLUME FINANZIARIO
L’avvio del programma è subordinato ad approvazione per mezzo di Decreto del Ministero della Difesa, il quale, a premessa della sua emanazione, verrà trasmesso alle Camere per l’espressione del parere delle Commissioni competenti (ex art. 536 del D.lgs. 66/2010, Codice dell’Ordinamento Militare).
Il programma ha un onere complessivo di 35M€ distribuiti in 3 anni.
Technological evolution and NATO's renewed interest in Collective Defence gave momentum to the modernisation programme for the "Ariete" tank, looking forward to the objective of producing a new platform as of 2030, in a multinational context.
The so-called "light" update, to be interpreted as an initial solution to the development of the new platform in the long run, will focus, in particular, on the following areas:
mobility, by revising the track system and embodying a night/day vision device.
protection, mainly by fitting the vehicle with suitable anti-mine/anti-IED protection systems.
engagement accuracy and lethality, by means of new optics for the tank commander and the gunner, which will ensure an improvement in the discovery and engagement capability, also thanks to the use of latest generation ammunition.
Der Vertrag zur Modernisierung des Kampfpanzers "Ariete" wurde am 2. August 2019 mit Iveco - Oto Melara (CIO) unterzeichnet.
Bis 2021 sollen drei Prototypen gefertigt werden. Iveco Defence Vehicles wird für den Mobilitätsanteil und die Sicherheit der Besatzung (z.B. das Bremssystem) verantwortlich sein, Leonardo Electronics (über Oto Melara und Selex Galileo) wird die Modernisierung von Turm und Chassis übernehmen, insbesondere die Brandunterdrückungsanlage und den ABC-Schutz.
Beim Triebwerk sollen einige Komponenten ersetzt und die Leistung von 1300 PS auf 1500 PS gesteigert werden, um das erhöhte Gewicht durch Zusatzpanzerungen bewältigen zu können. Außerdem werden obsolete Bauteile ersetzt, wie die Öltanks, und die Federung des Fahrwerks überholt.
Beim Turm wird der elektro-hydraulische Antrieb mit einem elektrischen Antrieb ersetzt (was die Sicherheit der Besatzung erhöht und das Gewicht des Turms reduziert). Darüber hinaus werden ein neuer Ballistikrechner (aus dem "Centauro 2") und neue Optiken eingebaut. Der Fahrzeugkommandant wird ein neues Zielsystem "New Attila" erhalten, wie es bereits beim "Centauro 2" verwendet wird, ebenso wird die Zieloptik für den Richtschützen mit einem OLED-Display ergänzt und der Sensor wird mit einem Wärmebildgerät der 3. Generation ersetzt.
Der Turm wird zum Einbau des Funksystems Harris AN/PRC-152 vorbereitet, das das VHF-Funkgerät SINCGARS ersetzt. Weiters wird eine digitale Bordsprechanlage eingebaut, wodurch die Besatzungsmitglieder mit abgesessenen Soldaten kommunizieren können, welche mit Gruppenfunk (Personal Role Radio) ausgestattet sind. Der Fahrzeugkommandant erhält ein vereinfachtes Navigationssystem mit einem GPS SAASM-Empfänger, das die aktuelle Position des Fahrzeugs auf einem eigenen Display anzeigt.
Leonardo wird sämtliche Systeme in Turm und Wanne überholen, darunter das gesamte Belüftungssystem, die ABC-Schutzanlage, die Periskope des Fahrzeugs, das Armaturenbrett, die Stromversorgung und die Steuerungseinheit in der Wanne, außerdem den ballistischen Schutz, das Waffensystem und alle tragenden Strukturen von Wanne und Turm (damit die neuen Systeme eingerüstet und die Ergonomie verbessert werden kann).
Der Bau der drei Prototypen dient auch der Risikoreduktion für die Modernisierung der schweren Kettenfahrzeuge der Esercito Italiano.
Italy might join MGCS, Italian Undersecretary for Defence says
The upgrade will include the adoption of a new 1,500 hp powerpack, replacing the current one which provides only 1,300 hp, which will bring with it the upgrade of the ZF transmission, mobility on soft terrains being increased thanks to the adoption of new tracks, which increased width will allow decreasing the specific ground pressure, a requirement based on lessons learned i.e. in Iraq, where the Ariete was fitted with the heavier add-on kit available at that time (see the opening photo). Both the commander’s and the gunner’s optronics will be replaced by new generation systems, derived from those adopted on the Centauro II armoured car, the former receiving an Attila D (for Digital) panoramic sight while the latter will get a 3rd Gen Tilde B thermal sight. Also safety will be improved thanks to the replacement of hydraulics actuators with electric ones in the turret. The upgrade will also include the adoption of Larimart’s UIS-379 D Digital Intercom system in place of the old analog one and the fitting for an AN/PRC-152 Multiband Handheld Radio with SATCOM capability. Should the prototypes performances meet the MoD requirements, the plan is to upgrade 125 more Ariete MBTs to cover the needs of the three regiments and of the Cavalry School.
Bei einer vom IV Reparto Logistico des Stato Maggiore di Esercito organisierten Besprechung wurde das Upgrade des Kampfpanzers "Ariete" besprochen. Derzeit entstehen bei CIO (Iveco - Leonardo), in La Spezia (Leonardo) und Bozen (Iveco), drei Prototypen. Diese werden mit leistungsstärkeren Motoren (1500 PS statt 1300 PS), neuem Getriebe, einem neu entwickelten Bremssystem und weitere Komponenten wie einem neuen Ballistikcomputer und neuen Optiken ausgestattet. Das Fahrwerk wird mit breiteren Ketten und neuen Enddämpfern versehen.

Will Poland build a Main Battle Tank with Italy and Spain? "Political decisions are the key"
Italy is considering the launch of a new main battle tank development project in collaboration with the NATO allies. The new platform would replace the C1 Ariete MBTs. Poland is among the nations that received the proposal. The Italian Ministry of Defence reached out to some of the EU nations, including Poland, and proposed collaboration in a project pertaining to land platforms. Analysis of that proposal is currently in progress at the Polish Ministry of Defence, the press department of the Operational Center of the Polish Ministry of Defence informed.
The proposal to begin effort aimed at the development of a new generation Italian-Polish MBT was mentioned last year by Marco Lupo, President at Leonardo Poland, during an interview for Leonardo Poland. He told us that Leonardo’s proposal assumes that a new MBT would be developed jointly, based on advanced tech provided by Leonardo and the PGZ Group. Lupo also noted that the Italian military has already expressed its need to introduce a replacement of the C-1 Ariete MBT. The new platform would be seen as a response to that requirement.
Currently, we already know that proposal as such has been submitted at the governmental level. Spain is another state that is being considered within the context of the Italian MBT-related collaboration. Defence24.pl has found out that the Spanish military attache contacted Poland to carry out a preliminary review of the Italian proposal.
