The Italian Army carries out its first firings with the Freccia Armoured Mortar Carrier

In mid-October the Italian Army 82nd Infantry Regiment, belonging to the “Pinerolo” Mechanised Brigade, carried out its first firing with the newly received Freccia Armoured Mortar Carrier (AMC)variant.

The firings took place at the Torre di Nebbia training area, in southern-Italy, and involved the Heavy Mortar Platoon of the Manoeuvre Support Company, the unit being equipped with four recently delivered AMC vehicles. The Centauro AMC, based on the Freccia chassis, has a combat weight of 30 tonnes and is armed with a Leonardo Defence Systems Hitrole Light remotely controlled weapon station for self-defence, the main weapon being the TDA 2R2M rifled mounted mortar system. The latter is installed in the rear compartment, a two-piece hatch being opened once in position, the weapon aiming being done automatically through the fire control system, a three-man crew plus the driver. The mortar can be traversed on a ±200° arc, elevation being between +45° and +85°; the semi-automatic loading system allows a maximum rate of fire of 10 rounds per minute.

Italy Procures Further 30 FRECCIA AIFV

A contract for the purchase of 30 FRECCIA VBM 8x8 armoured infantry fighting vehicles (AIFV) – five in a combat configuration and 25 in an anti-tank variant – and including a ten-year integrated logistics support package – was concluded between CIO Iveco-OTO Melara and the Italian General Secretariat of Defence and National Armaments Directorate in Rome on 27 December.

The newest contract makes use of funds allocating around €1.5 billion to the FRECCIA VBM programme in the period up to 2032, drawn from resources approved by the 2017 and 2018 Budget Bills. It also marks the resumption of the supply of vehicles to the Italian Army’s Second Medium Brigade, a unit based on 381 systems in various configurations.

Nuove tecnologie per l’Esercito Italiano

I soldati dell’Esercito potranno contare anche sull’ampliamento del parco Veicolo Blindato Medio (VBM) 8x8 “Freccia”, approvvigionato in altre 30 unità con opzione per successive 11 in versione controcarri, che rappresenta il primo mezzo da combattimento digitalizzato ad essere stato introdotto in servizio.

Contemporaneamente si sta procedendo all’adeguamento tecnologico del sistema, prevedendo una nuova configurazione in versione evoluta che vedrà un incremento delle proprie capacità in termini di protezione con particolare attenzione alla difesa da ordigni esplosivi improvvisati, alla mobilità e alla potenza di fuoco, con una torretta dotata di un’arma principale da 30 mm, controllata in remoto dall’equipaggio.

Der neue Vertrag umfasst 30 VBM "Freccia" und eine Option auf weitere 11 Radpanzer in einer Panzerabwehrversion. Dabei handelt es sich um das erste digitalisierte Gefechtsfahrzeug, das im italienischen Heer eingeführt wird. Die 30 Fahrzeuge sind eine Weiterentwicklung des "Freccia", die über höheren Schutz gegen IEDS, höhere Mobilität und eine ferngesteuerte Waffenstation mit einer 30 mm-Maschinenkanone verfügt.

Conclusi i test del sistema C2D/N EVO

Das italienische Heer erprobt momentan das neue Führungssystem C2D/N EVO, das das derzeit auf dem VBM "Freccia" genutzte System bzw. die Führungssoftware C2D des Systems SICCONA ersetzen soll. An den Tests sind das Ce.Si.Va. (Centro di Simulazione e Validazione dell'Esercito) und Personal der Brigata meccanizzata “Pinerolo”, des Comando Trasmissioni-RTE und der 3., 4. und 6. Abteilung des Generalstabs der Esercito Italiano sowie der Firmen LEONARDO und LARIMART beteiligt. Das Vorhaben findet in der Kaserne "R. Stella" und am Übungsplatz Foce Ofanto statt. Dabei kommen digitalisierte Führungsshelter (PCD nodo T5) und ein Verband aus 13 VBM "Freccia" sowie die Komponente TC2 (Tactical Command and Control) des Systems "Soldato Sicuro" zum Einsatz. Alle Systeme sind in SIACCON ADV integriert.

Lo Stato Maggiore dell’Esercito, in coordinazione con i principali stakeholders della Difesa e del comparto industriale nazionale, sta conducendo uno studio finalizzato ad avviare, entro la fine del 2021, un programma di Mid-Life Upgrade del VBM 8x8 “Freccia”. Gli interventi tecnici consentiranno di migliorarlo nelle principali componenti meccaniche, elettroniche e dei sistemi di comunicazione e Comando e Controllo.

The Iveco - Oto Melara Consortium signs the contract for the Italian Army’s new VBM Plus

The Iveco - Oto Melara Consortium (CIO) announces the signing of a contract to supply 14 Mortar Carrier VBMs, 26 Command Post VBMs (13 in Tactical Unit and 13 in Command Unit version), along with six “10x10” rescue and recovery vehicles.

Signed on 30 December 2021, at the Secretary of Defence (Segredifesa) Land Armaments Directorate, the contract comes as part of the ongoing supply (“Phase 2”) of Medium Armoured Vehicles to the Italian Army’s Second Medium Brigade, and includes an upgrade to “PLUS” version for the VBM platform, as well as long-term integrated logistics support for all platforms purchased.

The VBM Combat “PLUS” version will see changes to both the vehicle and the turret. Changes to the vehicle include upgrading to common rail technology for the engine, taking it from 550 HP to 660 HP ready for a future hybrid-electric traction system, and upgrades to the driveline, increasing growth potential by up to 15% compared to current levels.

As regards the turret, Leonardo is upgrading the fire control system, introducing latest generation electronic components capable of interfacing the new “Janus D” and “Lothar D” digital optic detection and aiming systems. The contract also includes the supply of a new digital intercom system and a fully upgraded CIS system with four-channel SDR VQ1 radio, as well as the new C2D / N Evo Command and Control system, both developed by Leonardo.

The vehicle will also be equipped with Galileo PRS technology developed in Italy as part of the European Union secure satellite navigation system. In specific terms this means the VBM will be equipped with a newly developed satellite receiver, the first of its kind capable of receiving secure satellite navigation services from both the US GPS and European Galileo PRS systems.

In conclusion, the Iveco Defence Vehicles Recovery and Rescue platforms feature all-wheel drive over 5 axles, with three steering axles, FPT Industrial's 680 HP Cursor 16 engine and a new-design cabin offering the highest crew protection standards. These vehicles can lift and move loads of up to 25 t from a stable platform and recover vehicles broken down, damaged or overturned with overall weight up to 32 t.
