White Paper on Defence (August 2015)
6.4.1 Maritime Patrolling and ISTAR

The Air Corps currently provides surveillance capacity primarily through two CASA 235 Maritime Patrol Aircraft and five Cessna aircraft. The CASA 235s are due for replacement in 2019.

The existing CASA 235s primarily undertake maritime surveillance, although they may also be used for a broader range of tasks. These include, air ambulance missions, evacuation missions, transport of materiel, search and rescue top cover and occasionally ministerial air transport. The CASA 235s will be replaced with consideration of their replacement with larger more capable aircraft. This would enhance maritime surveillance and provide a greater degree of utility for transport and cargo carrying tasks. The existing five Cessnas, which are currently due for replacement, will be replaced with three larger aircraft suitably equipped for ISTAR tasks.

Ireland funds procurement of aircraft and armoured vehicles
Equipment procurement in 2020 includes replacements for two CASA CN235s, which are reaching the end of their service lives. Irish media reports indicate that Airbus is a contender to offer two C-295s for EUR60 million.

Five Cessna 172H Skyhawks, used by the Irish Air Corps in a utility role, were taken out of service in September 2019; they will be replaced by three Pilatus PC-12NGs in 2020 for EUR32 million.

Airbus Defence & Space Military Aircraft
C-295 Persuader

The Airbus Defence & Space (formerly EADS CASA) C-295 Persuader MPA is based around the standard transport airframe but with six hardpoints for weapons and equipment for maritime patrol, ASW and ASuW missions. The MPA is in service with the Chilean Navy (three aircraft), the Portuguese Air Force (five) and the Royal Air Force of Oman (three). Brazil also operates three of the type in the maritime SAR role.

Applications: MPA
Length: 25m
Height at tail: 9m
Wingspan: 26m
Max speed: 310kt, 260kt
operating Range: 1,555km
Powerplant: 2x Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprops
MTOW: 23,200kg
Service ceiling: 13,500ft
Flight crew: 2

Armament Not Applicable

Jedenfalls waren im Request for Proposals keine Waffen vorgesehen:
