Stefanović: Decision on military service will be made by National Assembly

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, appeared on the "Prva" Television morning show "Jutro", where he stated that the final decision on the potential reintroduction of compulsory military service would be made by the National Assembly, which had suspended that obligation in 2010. He pointed out that a wide public debate on this topic was already taking place and that he expected the Assembly to decide on this issue in September or October.

“We will align the proposal with the President and the Government. We did not want to make such an important decision overnight, but we started a complex process of public debate. This subject is widely discussed by experts from various fields," said Minister Stefanović, adding that it was well known that he personally supported compulsory military service, but that a broad public debate was taking place that should show our people’ position on this issue.

Serbian Armed Forces receive 30 T-72MS tanks and 30 BRDM-2MS armoured reconnaissance vehicles (23. Mai 2021)
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, and Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff General Milan Mojsilović attended today the handover of T-72MS tanks and BRDM-2MS armoured reconnaissance vehicles donated to Serbia by the Russian Federation at the “Mija Stanimirović” barracks in Niš.
- It is a donation from the Russian Federation to the Serbian Armed Forces worth about 75 million euros, and it includes 30 BRDM-2MS armoured personnel carriers and 30 modernized T-72 MS tanks, based on an agreement reached in Sochi by presidents Vučić and Putin. We are deeply grateful to the Russian Federation, because this is a powerful reinforcement for the Serbian Armed Forces - said Minister Stefanović after the handover.

He noted that the first part of this donation, 11 T-72 tanks and 10 armoured personnel carriers, had also been presented in Niš in November.
The T-72MS tank is an upgraded variant of the T-72 tank. The tank was upgraded at Russia’s 61st Armoured Overhaul Institute (BTRZ). The T-72MS tank weighs 44.5 tons with the maximum speed of 60 km/h. It is fitted with a 125mm gun and a 42-projectile combat set, a 7.62mm PKT machine gun with a 2,000-round combat set and a 12.7mm KORD machine gun with a 600-round combat set.

Serbia buys Kornet ATGMs and more Pantsyr S1M air defence systems
Serbia will receive a first batch of Kornet anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said during a visit to the Ušće 2021 display of military equipment in Belgrade, marking Serbian National Unity Day on 15 September. The missiles have a range of 8 km and will arm light vehicles that equip special forces and infantry units.

Nenad Miloradović, Assistant Minister for Material Resources in the Ministry of Defence (MoD), told Vučić that Thales 70 mm laser-guided air-to-ground rockets, with a range of 6 km, were being procured for Serbian Air Force and Air Defence (RV i PVO) H145M helicopters. He added that negotiations were underway with France for more H145M helicopters and Mistral 3 short-range air defence missile systems for integration into Serbia's indigenously developed PASARS self-propelled anti-aircraft guns (SPAAGs).

Vučić revealed that Serbia had ordered more Pantsyr S1M air defence systems and plans to procure Chinese-made CH-95 medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicles.
