Sweden to prepare next-gen fighter plans
Sweden is to begin formal planning for its next-generation combat aircraft during the next budgetary cycle of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the government disclosed on 7 July.

The groundwork for developing the country’s future combat aviation strategy will run over five-years, with a range of possible activities outlined by the government in the budgetary documentation it has released for the armed forces.

“Preparatory work on the future combat aviation capability and the next generation of fighter aircraft will begin during the defence decision period 2021-2025. Preparations can include studies, technology development, and demonstrator activities in collaboration with one or more international partners,” the documents said.

The government provided no further detail as to what form Sweden’s future combat aviation capability might take, but based on recent announcements and other events it is likely to follow one of four paths. These would be further development of the Saab Gripen, fully committing to the Tempest project alongside Italy and the UK, joining another international project, or developing its own indigenous fighter aircraft.

Dassault rules out widening FCAS partnership
Dassault chief executive Eric Trappier has stressed that no more countries can be admitted to the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) programme being co-developed by France, Germany and Spain for fear of delaying the effort.
Although Spain was admitted into the programme earlier this year, Trappier does not want to see further countries join.

“If we change partners every six months we will not reach [service entry] in 2040,” he said during a half-year results briefing on 23 July.

Allowing Madrid to “jump in” was “complicated”, he says, but “feasible” at this relatively early stage.

He argues that a tri-national project can be considered a European one. “Does it have to be all 27 [EU members]? No, I don’t think so.”

Trappier also ruled out any merger, at least in the short term, of the FCAS programme with the UK-led Tempest effort, which also includes Italy and Sweden.

“We should never say never, but in 2020, 2021, 2022, there won’t be a merger with Tempest. If there were then we would have to reset and go back to zero.”

  • FUTURE COMBAT AIR SYSTEM (FCAS)

February 20, 2020 : French and German governments awarded Dassault Aviation, Airbus, together with their partners MTU Aero Engines, Safran, MBDA and Thales, the initial framework contract (Phase 1A), which launches the demonstrator phase for the FCAS, including the demonstrator of the New Generation Fighter (NGF)

This framework contract covers a first period of 18 months with the ambition to begin flight tests in 2026.

Next major step of the program: integration of Spain and involvement of additional suppliers, that will require a new notification by governments in 2021.

As of today, first works performed on the NGF demonstrator project in partnership with Airbus Defence and Space have been focused on the aerodynamic design.
