Sweden to join British ‘Tempest’ next-gen fighter push
Sweden is set to become the first international partner to join the British “Tempest” sixth-generation fighter program.

An announcement involving the governments and industries of the two nations is expected to be made at the three-day Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) event, which begins July 19 at RAF Fairford, according to industry executives.
Mark Goldsack, the director of the UK government's defense and security export organization, told media at the Paris Air Show recently that the British were holding discussions about joining the program with at least a dozen countries.
The British expect to start replacing the Typhoon with a new jet fighter around 2040.
Sweden had also been in talks about joining the FCAS program, but Saab CEO Hakan Buskhe pretty much played down any prospect of a tie-up with the Franco-German venture when he recently told reporters, “We are (in) much more intensive discussions with the Brits than the other consortium. ... I think we can do good things together.” ... hter-push/

UK and Sweden partner on future combat air
Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt and her Swedish counterpart Peter Hultqvist have signed a landmark agreement to partner on future combat air.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) commits both governments to work on a joint combat air development and acquisition programme, including the development of new concepts to meet both nations’ future requirements.
The Swedish Minister of Defence, Peter Hultqvist, confirmed both governments intend to remain at the forefront of combat air.

He stressed the opportunities to put advanced technologies onto Gripen and Typhoon, the world class combat aircraft currently operated by Sweden and the UK respectively, before inserting these technologies onto a future combat air system.
Discussions between industries and governments had been ongoing since the publication of the UK’s Combat Air Strategy in July 2018, with common ground identified based on similar future Combat Air requirements, including being optimised for air defence.

Defence Minister Andrew confirmed that other nations were encouraged to join the UK/Swedish dialogue, on the condition that they had similar requirements.

The Air Force Chiefs of both nations addressed the audience at the event, as well as industry. UK industry was represented by BAE Systems, whilst Swedish industry was represented by Saab. ... combat-air

MoD announces Project ‘Mosquito’ contracts to develop unmanned technologies for fast jets
Announced at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) at Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford in Gloucestershire, the RAF's Rapid Capabilities Office (RCO) awarded three contracts to develop a technology demonstrator, named Project 'Mosquito', to explore the addition of unmanned 'loyal wingman' capabilities onto fast jets.

"At the launch of the Combat Air Strategy last year, the MoD revealed the concept future fighter jet Tempest. The vision of the jet featured advanced flexible power and propulsion systems, a virtual cockpit, swarming weapons and laser-directed energy weapons. Operated either manned or unmanned, it would be rapidly upgradeable and cyber resilient. Following on from last year's announcement, a new project to develop a novel unmanned combat aircraft has been announced by the RAF and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl)," defence minister Stuart Andrew said on 19 July.

The three Project 'Mosquito' contracts have been awarded under the wider Lightweight Affordable Novel Combat Aircraft (LANCA) programme, and involve Blue Bear Systems Research, Boeing Defence UK, and Callen-Lenz (Team Blackdawn, partnered with Bombardier Belfast and Northrop Grumman UK).

As noted by the MoD the LANCA programme aims to explore the utility and feasibility of unmanned capabilities, which can be added to existing and future fast jet aircraft, "specifically those that offer substantial reductions in programme costs and development timelines".

These capabilities include, but are not limited to, the use of 'loyal wingmen' that see unmanned aircraft flown in concert with a manned aircraft, as well as swarming unmanned aircraft designed to overwhelm enemy air defences. "The swarm will hunt for enemy radar and missile systems and then cue our other aircraft to avoid or destroy them", the MoD previously told Jane's. ... -fast-jets

Dstl to develop conceptual unmanned aircraft for RAF (19. Juli 2019)
Under LANCA, a technology demonstrator project known as ‘Mosquito’ has awarded contracts for Phase 1 of the work, which will produce a preliminary system design for an unmanned air vehicle and assessment of the key risk areas and cost-capability trade-offs for an operational concept. Initial flight test of the demonstrator air vehicle could take place as early as 2022.
LANCA originated in 2015 studies by Dstl to understand innovative Combat Air technologies and concepts that might offer radical reductions in cost and development time. Subsequently LANCA was brought into the RAF RCO as part of the Future Combat Air System Technology Initiative (FCAS TI).
Project Mosquito has two planned phases. After the 12-month Phase 1, Phase 2 will select up to two of the Phase 1 solutions to further mature the designs, complete manufacturing of the technology demonstrator and conclude with a limited flight-test programme. ... ft-for-raf

MBDA readies new missile for electronic warfare
The British Ministry of Defence has tapped MBDA to demonstrate an electronic warfare version of the company’s Spear missile.

The idea is to replace the warhead with a miniaturized payload, made by Leonardo, that can jam enemy air defenses or beckon them away from strike missiles following in their wake, the company said at the DSEI defense trade show in London.

“These state-of-the-art electronic jammers will confuse our adversaries and keep our pilots safer than ever in the air,” Defence Procurement Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan was quoted as saying in an MBDA statement. “Paired with the devastating power of precision Brimstone and Meteor missiles, our world-class F-35 and Typhoon jets will continue to rule the skies in the years to come.”

MBDA plans to offer the new missile for swarm-like scenarios, meaning a number of them would be launched ahead of traditional strike weapons to confuse and overwhelm radar defenses. ... c-warfare/
