Safran, MTU agree framework for future fighter engine

https://www.janes.com/article/92964/saf ... ter-engine

Safran and MTU Aero Engines achieve a major step forward for the engine of the Next Generation Fighter (NGF)
The FCAS (Future Combat Air System) program takes a major step ahead: Safran Aircraft Engines and MTU Aero Engines settled the details concerning their eye-level partnership to develop the engine of the next-generation European fighter aircraft NGF.

This industrial agreement relies on the principles of the Letter Of Intent (LOI) signed between the two companies in February 2019, which specifies that Safran will take the lead in engine design and integration, and MTU Aero Engines will take the lead in engine services.

In the framework of the contractual scheme defined by France and Germany, Safran Aircraft Engines will be the prime contractor and MTU Aero Engines the main partner for the first phase of Research and Technology (Phase 1A).

The two partners also agreed on the foundation of a 50/50 joint venture that will be incorporated by the end of 2021 to manage the development, the production and the after-sales support activities of the new engine that will power the Next Generation Fighter (NGF).

Tempest drives forward as Leonardo unveils new radar sensing technology
Leonardo UK has demonstrated the performance of a new radar receiver/warner technology as part of its on-going development work for Tempest, the next generation combat air project which will see the UK, Italy and Sweden working closely together. In a laboratory demonstration for the UK Ministry of Defence and other Team Tempest partners, the new sensor demonstrated a direction finding performance of four times what is possible with a typical radar warning receiver while being just 1/10th the size of a standard system.
Leonardo’s UK role in the team is to develop Tempest’s sensor package and integrate these sensors into the platform’s mission system.
One such area of development, and the focus of the recent lab demonstration, is in radar warning. This technology is used to sense the radio frequency (RF) signals emitted by potentially hostile radars and then use this information for a variety of uses, including warning an operator that an enemy is trying to ‘lock on’ to their aircraft. Such sensors can also support tasks such as intelligence gathering and combat identification. In future, threat radars are likely to use a range of technologies and software techniques to make it harder to identify their signals, meaning that Tempest’s sensors will need to be sophisticated enough to be able to counter such techniques and flexible enough to be updated in response to new technologies as they emerge on the battlefield.

The reduced size and weight of Leonardo’s new receiver technology, as well as reduced power requirements, means that it will be possible to integrate the sensor into a multi-function array. This concept, one of a number of innovative ideas being considered for Tempest, could see a number of multi-purpose sensors spread around the aircraft, simultaneously sensing and tracking enemy aircraft, incoming missiles and other threats from all directions, while being fully integrated with a forward-facing radar.

Three companies to lead Spain’s UAV contribution to FCAS
Three Spanish companies are to jointly spearhead the country's participation in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) element of the NGWS (Next Generation Weapon System) that forms part of the wider Future Combat Air System (FCAS)/Système de Combat Aérien Futur (SCAF) programme.

GMV, SENER Aeroespacial and Tecnobit Grupo Oesia announced that they had reached the accord as part of the industrial plan being co-ordinated by the Spanish Ministry of Defence (MoD). An agreement was signed at the MoD on 17 February, at which the government was represented by the Secretary of State for Defence, Ángel Olivares, and the Secretary General for Industry and SMEs, Raul Blanco.

For FCAS/SCAF, the NGWS comprises the New Generation Fighter (NGF) and 'loyal wingman' UAVs. These UAVs are known as Remote Carriers (RCs), and overall development is being led by Airbus.

News of the Spanish participation in developing the RCs came days after France and Germany launched the demonstrator phase of the FCAS/SCAF project on 12 February. Besides the NGWS, this demonstrator phase also includes the Air Combat Cloud (ACC), which networks together all the elements of the future battlespace.
