Design concepts emerge for possible new French–German Main Ground Combat System
France and Germany have been working on the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) since 2012 to replace their currently deployed main battle tanks (MBTs), and details of the likely requirements are beginning to emerge through four design concepts.

In the French Army the MGCS would potentially replace the Nexter Systems Leclerc MBT, of which 400 were delivered and 200 remain in service.
In the German Army, the MGCS would potentially replace the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann Leopard 2A6 MBT that is now being upgraded to the Leopard 2A7 standard with the potential for a further upgrade to the Leopard 2A8 standard, the sources said.

The MGCS is currently a government-to-government project under the Land Systems Roadmap Group (LSRG), which meets twice a year to help co-ordinate the two national programmes.

The MGCS is funded by the French DGA and the German BAAINBw, with each having a neutral technical advisor and links to their respective defence industries. Members of the group are studying common functional and technological requirements, negotiating the possible sharing of future key technologies, and planning technology demonstrations.

The current Concept Phase II is understood to be honing four platform concepts, and this should be completed soon.

The first of these is a single platform concept that uses a tracked vehicle with a large calibre externally mounted gun, which could be the Rheinmetall 130 mm smoothbore gun that launched in mid-2016 and has started firing trials.

France wants Germany to join forces on a missile
“A few weeks ago we were at the Berlin Air Show when we took a big step with the Future Air Combat System,” French Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly said in response to a Defense News question at the Eurosatory trade show, which opened June 11.

And tomorrow, with the Germans, we will launch the future main battle tank. So we are moving ahead swiftly in Franco-German cooperation,” she continued, adding that other programs are also being considered by European allies.

L'Italie s'intéresse au futur char franco-allemand (14. Juni 2018)

Tank makers steel themselves for Europe’s next big land-weapon contest
“Come back and see me in December in Unterlüß,” Ben Hudson, head of the company’s vehicle systems division, told Defense News during an interview in Paris. He was referring to a small German town one hour south of Hamburg where Rheinmetall runs a manufacturing plant.

Hudson declined to say more about what the company would roll out at that time. “I can’t mention it just yet,” he said. “Expect more surprises in the future. We’re already working on some other things in the secret laboratories of Rheinmetall.”
He argued that developing the next-generation tank must begin with considering the “threat” out there, namely the Russian T-14 and T-15 tanks, which are based on a common chassis dubbed Armata. Those vehicles’ characteristics, or at least what is known about them, dictate “high lethality” be built into the future European tank, according to Hudson.

“How do you defeat a tank that has four active defense systems on it?” he asked.

And then there is General Dynamics European Land Systems, the Old World’s offspring of the U.S. maker of the Abrams tank and Stryker vehicle.

The company is careful to note its European roots: a consolidated mishmash of formerly independent armored-vehicle makers from across the continent.

Manuel Lineros, vice president of engineering, told Defense News that the company’s Ascot vehicle will be the GDELS offering for the European next-gen tank. Advertised for its mobility and weighing in at roughly 45 tons, the tracked vehicle falls in the class of infantry fighting vehicles, putting it one notch below the heaviest battle tank category.

“I understand the battlefield has changed,” Lineros said in an interview at Eurosatory. “We have to abandon the ideas of a combat vehicle versus a classic main battle tank. Everything is so mixed up now.”

Whatever the Ascot lacks in sheer mass against projectiles aimed at its shell could be compensated with an active protection system and the ability to move quickly on the battlefield, argued Lineros. “We have to be flexible in this way of interpreting the requirements.”

That includes defending against drone swarms, which could become the peer-to-peer equivalent of improvised explosive devices designed to rip open the underbellies of vehicles, he said. Unlike the recent countermine vehicle architecture, that type of aerial threat could mean the top surface of future vehicles will be a weak point requiring special protection, he added.

Though adding armor plates remains the industry’s first instinct in responding to new threats, Lineros said there is a limit to what he called an “addiction” to steel. “More and more we’ll be moving out of this sport.”

Auf dem Weg zum europäischen Superpanzer (6. November 2018)

IAV 2019: Nexter tests 140 mm gun on Leclerc MBT
Nexter has fit a 140 mm gun on a Leclerc main battle tank (MBT) to gather data for the Franco-German Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) programme to replace it and the Leopard 2, Jane's learned at the International Armoured Vehicles (IAV) 2019 conference held in London on 21-24 January.

This is understood to be the first time that a 140 mm gun has been successfully integrated onto a 50-tonne MBT and conducted over 200 firings. It is expected to provide a 70% increase in firepower over a NATO standard 120 mm gun.

Nexter Trials LECLERC with Bigger Gun and Drones

Nexter has released details of previously unknown live fire trials with its developmental 140mm gun integrated onto a LECLERC main battle tank (MBT) platform, which occurred last year as part of ongoing concept studies for the next-generation Main Ground Combat System (MGCS).

The firing trials took place over several months, according to Mike Duckworth, Vice President of Regional Sales at Nexter, speaking to MONCh: “We had the hardware...a lot of it was about demonstrating that we could put it on the 50t LECLERC, looking at how the chassis performed and the overpressures.”

“But we are not saying that MGCS is a Leclerc with a 140mm,” said Mr Duckworth. “Conceptual studies are ongoing.”

The 140mm gun, a product of the Future Tank Main Armament programme between several nations in the 1990s, has only been trialled on test rigs before according to Nexter. Although for this integration there was no autoloader functionality or gun stabilisation, and mobility was not trialled.
The company is also working on an improved armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot (APFSDS) round called SHARD, as well as a guided 120mm round called POLYNEGE that could follow a pre-programmed path or be laser-guided.
