DISCOVER MORE ABOUT THE LATEST CAPABILITY ENHANCEMENT CONTRACT (5. August 2021)
Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH and NETMA, the NATO Eurofighter & Tornado Management Agency, have signed a contract worth close to €300 million for the Consolidation Package Step Two & Three – Phase 1 Contract.
An important element of the contract deals with capability enhancements for operating Typhoon with the Meteor beyond visual range, air-to-air missile, with the capability implementation being transferred from the M-Scan to E-Scan radar.

It also includes improvements to the way Typhoon operates with the Brimstone precision air-to-surface capability; adaptations to the cockpit display formats; enhancements to interoperability through MIDS Link 16 and radio; and improvements to the defensive aids sub system (DASS).
What is the value of the contract?

The initial first phase of the contract is just under the 300 million euros, with a planned amendment to introduce additional capabilities, (e.g. regulatory compliance). After the initial phase of the contract a second phase, scheduled for award in mid-2022, will provide coverage through to completion.

What will the capabilities bring for Eurofighter customers?

The Consolidation Package represents an evolution of the capabilities of the aircraft. Taken together this package makes the weapon system better and more versatile for end user air forces, with improvements to individual capabilities being rolled out across the whole fleet of M-Scan and E-Scan aircraft.

Through updates to Typhoon’s operational capability with Meteor and Brimstone, the contract strengthens both the air-to-air and air-to-surface capabilities of the weapon system and rolls these updates out across the whole fleet.

At the same time, it significantly improves the platform’s interoperability with coalition forces through the enhancements to the MIDS and radios. The changes to cockpit display formats follow on from feedback from the operator community who have asked for certain changes to improve the pilot and machine interaction.

Where will the work take place?

The activity will primarily take place within the four Eurofighter industry partners — BAE Systems, Airbus Germany, Airbus Spain and Leonardo — but with significant aspects being undertaken within the wider supply base, most specifically EuroRadar and EuroDASS.

  • Long Term Evolution Programme Launched (19. Juli 2019)
Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH, EUROJET Turbo GmbH and NETMA, the NATO Eurofighter & Tornado Management Agency, have signed contracts together worth €53.7 million to support the long-term development of the Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft.

The study contracts, which look at the Long Term Evolution (LTE) of the aircraft and the EJ200 engine, will span a total of 19 months for the aircraft and 9 months for the engine elements.
The Human-Machine Interface: Refreshed cockpit displays and controls which will enable more demanding missions in the future, whilst ensuring full interoperability with cooperating assets in the air and over land and sea.

  • The F-35’s Touchscreen Isn’t Perfect—Can It Ever Be? (2. Februar 2021)
The same issues are now being debated when it comes to the controls of modern aircraft, and last month an anonymous F-35 Lightning II pilot weighed in on the controls of the Lockheed Martin-built Joint Strike Fighter for the website Hushkitnet. The touchscreen controls may have streamlined the cockpit of the fifth-generation aircraft, but not always with the best results, the unnamed pilot suggested.

“The cockpit is beautiful to look at—nothing analogue, all digital with about 10 actual switches in the cockpit. Notice I say beautiful to look at, not necessarily beautiful to interact with! In theory the all-glass display is great. It’s [sic] touchscreen, you can set it up to show pretty much anything you want in any layout you want,” the pilot wrote.

The pilot then goes on to describe how the display can be utilized to show the aircraft’s fuel system, and how it can be customized to just what the pilot wants to see. However, using the touchscreen display in the cockpit while flying the advanced aircraft isn’t anywhere near the same as scrolling on a mobile phone or tablet screen while stretched out on the couch.

“The drawback is in the complete lack of tactile response. It can be challenging to press the correct ‘button’ on the display whenever the jet is in motion as it is quite a bumpy ride at times. At present I am pressing the wrong part of the screen about 20% of the time in flight due to either mis-identification, or more commonly by my finger getting jostled around in turbulence or under G. One of the biggest drawbacks is that you can’t brace your hand against anything whilst typing—think how much easier it is to type on a smartphone with your thumbs versus trying to stab at a virtual keyboard on a large tablet with just your index finger.”

The pilot shared similar thoughts about the F-35’s lack of heads up display (HUD), which is instead integrated into the very expensive flight helmet—which cost approximately $400,000 each!

“First up, there’s no HUD as its all integrated into the helmet. The technology of the helmet is great, but I’d take a HUD any day. It all comes down to physics—you can only shrink things so much before they start to become degraded, and HUDs have bigger optics than helmets…currently,” the pilot noted.

https://www.diehl.com/defence/en/press- ... d-mission/

>> Royal Norwegian Air Force tested IRIS-T in air-to-ground mission. Now functionality has been enhanced with an air-to-surface engagement capability. This basic air-to-ground capability provides the ability to acquire, track and engage individual ground targets like boats/ships, small buildings and vehicles and has been successfully verified in September 2016 by a test firing from a Norwegian F-16. <<
