UK Jackals get upgrade for UN mission in Mali
Supacat Jackal wheeled vehicles trialled the upgrade package during Exercise ‘Wessex Storm’ on Salisbury Plain training area during February, according to a senior British Army officer.

The package was pulled together by the British Army’s Armour Development and Trials Unit (ADTU) at Bovington in Dorset and includes a mast-mounted thermal imaging camera system, a rapid erecting telescopic radio antenna, night vision upgrades, vehicle heaters, and driver wind deflectors. Companies involved in the project include Thales, Safran, Qioptiq, Rollatube, Exsel, and Petards Eyecraft 360, the officer said.

Jackal 1 moves towards hybrid electric drive installation

Bild
The UK’s Supacat completed physical modifications to a Jackal 1 4x4 surveillance and reconnaissance vehicle (SRV) in mid-December 2020, and is ready for Magtec to integrate its hybrid electric drive (HED) system.

Jackal 1 4x4 SRVs are powered by a six-cylinder Cummins diesel engine developing 185 hp, coupled to an Allison 2500 five-speed automatic transmission and a two-speed transfer case. This gives a maximum road speed of up to 120 km/h, and a range of up to 800 km.

For the HED application, the six-cylinder engine has been replaced by a four-cylinder Cummins diesel engine coupled to a generator that provides power to a bank of batteries located in the rear cargo area, which in turn provides power to the four wheels.

Magtec was selected in August 2020 by NP Aerospace, the lead contractor for the Protected Mobility Engineering & Technical Support (PMETS) contract. The company was assessed by NP Aerospace and the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) as able to offer a high Technology Readiness Level (TRL) HED application for the Jackal 1 with low developmental and programme risk.

When integration is completed, the vehicle will undergo a series of trials at the Millbrook Proving Ground (MPG) in the first quarter of 2021, with these trials expected to be completed in mid-2021.

NP Aerospace and Supacat have this week presented a significant milestone on the UK Ministry of Defence Protected Mobility Engineering & Technical Support (PMETS) Contract – the announcement of the Lightweight Recovery Vehicle reaching Initial Operating Capability (IOC). The vehicles will be handed over to British Army units this week.

Members of the team at NP Aerospace, engineering authority on the PMETS contract, and Supacat, vehicle OEM, joined representatives from the British Army, and Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) in a celebration at Supacat’s facilities in Devon.

Brigadier Matt Wilkinson, Vehicle Support Team Leader at DE&S, expressed his delight at the achievement and praised the collaboration between all parties involved, stating: “Today, we celebrated the Lightweight Recovery Variant reaching Initial Operating Capability, which is the product of a fantastic collaboration between the British Army, Defence Equipment and Support, Supacat and NP Aerospace. We now have a Lightweight Recovery capability, which the British Army can exploit to inform the Army’s Future Soldier requirements for recovery vehicles.”

David Petheram, Managing Director & Senior Vice President, NP Aerospace, commented: "The PMETS contract has run successfully for the last four years, delivering significant innovations that have benefited the British Army on operation. Achieving IOC is an important step in our lightweight recovery vehicle programme with Supacat and demonstrates our joint collaboration with industry partners for the benefit of the UK MOD.”
