Avalex to Supply “Tactical Agility” to the Austrian Air Forces S-70A Upgrade

By Avalex Technologies Posted February 9, 2018 In Press

Avalex officially partnered with ACE Aeronautics of Huntsville, AL, and Garmin International to solve a significant obsolescence problem for the Austrian Air Force. Austria’s fleet of nine S-70A-42 Black Hawk helicopters are aging (they’ve been around since 2002) and needed to comply with the Single European Sky initiative to standardize and futureproof air traffic management across Europe. The solution to Austria’s problem is based on ACE’s ACE DECK helicopter cockpit avionics upgrade kit developed in concert with Avalex and Garmin. The $40 million contract undertaken between Austria and GAS is for the design, production, integration and testing. The Garmin G5000H Integrated Flight Deck, designed to satisfy global airspace modernization efforts like Single European Sky, will supply civil navigation and flight management functions in the upgraded cockpits. Avalex’s rugged, battlefield-tested, qualified mission avionics, including ACM9454 cockpit management units, mission processors running Avalex Mission Mapping software, and AVC1816 Smart Video Management will supply military capabilities including tactical mapping, mission planning, and the integration of tactical systems including radios from multiple vendors, an upgraded Search and Rescue direction finder, inertial navigation and Scorpion® helmet mounted displays. According to GAS CEO Darrell Kindley, “this avionics modernization program will keep the Austrian Black Hawks supportable for another 20 years.”

Huntsville-based Ace Aeronautics, which does business as Global Aviation Solutions (GAS), has about 50 employees and plans to add another 25 to 50 positions at its Alabama location over the next two years.
As it ramps up in Guntersville, GAS has landed a major piece of new business. Earlier this month, the company was awarded a contract worth more than $40 million by the Republic of Austria Ministry of Defense to upgrade its fleet of Black Hawk helicopters.

The contract covers the design, manufacture, installation and testing of new avionic systems for nine Austrian S-70A-42 Black Hawk helicopters, said Darrell Kindley, the company’s president and CEO.

“GAS is pleased to provide the Austrian Air Force with our Garmin 5000H-based avionics upgrade kit called the ACEHAWK,” he said.
Products include upgrade kits for customers that already own UH-60A/L and S-70 Blackhawks. The company also supplies complete helicopters, UH-60As, with varying levels of structural, mechanical and avionics upgrades, purchased from the U.S. Army’s UH-60 divestiture program.

The Force Hawk team includes Ace Aeronautics and L3 Technologies. Bailey said Sierra Nevada Corp. teamed with the former because it had subject matter expertise, contractual relationship and technical data on the Garmin avionics suite. The company also had experience integrating it into a UH-60. L3 Technologies, Bailey said, was a good fit for a partnership because of its experience in training, training systems and training simulation. He said Sierra Nevada Corp. and the two entities had been cultivating a relationship over the past few years, which yielded beneficial collaboration.
Force Hawk features a Garmin G5000H avionics suite. This, Bailey said, is a component that makes the aircraft stand apart from its competition. The company said the cockpit features:

- Advanced flight deck
- High-resolution displays with vision clarity in all profiles
- Displays that divide into two pages to help display multiple systems and sensors
- Intuitive glass touchscreen interface with shallow menus and audible feedback
- Icon-identified touch-keys
- Line-of-sight/beyond-line-of-sight communications
- Access to navigation/communication functions, remote audio and intercom flight management system
- 4-inch-by-12-inch screens
“Principally for us, [we choose the avionics suite because] it was the fact that it's NexGen 2020-compliant now. So it has the ADS-B Out capability, and it's compliant and ready to go now. And it could be integrated into this Black Hawk and be successful,” Bailey said. “It's our understanding that not all offerers have a NexGen 2020-compliant cockpit, or that there are challenges with it. We had looked at a lot of different versions of what type of cockpit and flight deck to put in it. The Garmin product surfaced in all the analysis as the right way to go.”

In June, it was reported by R&WI sister publication Defense Daily that the Air Force had added a requirement for ADS-B Out in the competition. The service reportedly told bidders to include the technology in their proposals “to enhance safety and navigation efficiency.” In a statement, the Air Force said the main driving force behind that added requirement was the FAA’s 2020 mandate, as the aircraft’s mission set would include protecting intercontinental ballistic missile fields in the U.S.

New Force Hawk features include:

- GE Aviation T700-GE-701D engine with C controls
- Transmission
- Gearboxes
- Main rotor
- Tail rotor
- Unlimited life airframe

The aircraft also features a Breeze Eastern hoist, a fast rope insertion and extraction system, air survivability equipment capability and a FLIR Sensor Star Safire 380-HDc.
http://aviationweek.com/defense/snc-ent ... force-hawk
Gump Reynolds, a business development consultant for SNC, says the weight savings by moving to the new Garmin glass cockpit are substantial, upwards of 400 lb. The helicopter’s airframe and mission equipment are configured to lower drag.
Das sind beachtliche 180kg!

Sehr interessant!

Ohne Finanzierung?
