OIP launches SENTINEL at EUROSATORY 2018

OIP Sensor Systems from Oudenaarde, Belgium, launches SENTINEL, a 360° real-time day & night situational awareness system to be integrated in armoured fighting vehicles and main battle tanks.

SENTINEL is demonstrated on a modernized AIFV / M113 IFV vehicle on the joint SABIEX/OIP booth in Hall 6, Booth N° F287 at Eurosatory 2018.

SENTINEL typically consists of 6 camera units per vehicle + an optional driver’s unit and advanced imagery displays providing the crew inside the vehicle with a panoramic view of the battlefield, under closed hatches, without compromising safety.

SENTINEL features a highly intuitive user interface and low silhouette installation.

The 6 cameras are on a dynamically managed Ethernet network. Each user can select its preferred streams independently.

A motion detection feature triggers a video and an audio alert which can be turned on/off. The moving objects are indicated on the video stream.

Thanks to the modular feature of the cameras, the field of view can be tailored to the specific dead zone requirements and the placement on the vehicle.

“Nationally, the focus is on security islands.” (European Security & Defence 4/2018)

Interview with Lieutenant General Norbert Gehart, National Armaments Director, Austria
ESD: What are the most important armament programmes in your country, both current and forthcoming?

Gehart: Additional funds will be provided for future projects concerning multipurpose helicopters and to improve the mobility of the Austrian Armed Forces (for example HÄGGLUNDS, PANDUR EVO and other trucks and vehicles).

ESD: Which of these are carried out in international partnerships, and who are your partners?

Gehart: At HÄGGLUNDS we have Sweden as our partner. For this system the establishment of a HÄGGLUNDS user group is considered. For helicopters, the aim is to work together throughout the life cycle of this system, but the planning phase is not yet complete. The cooperation within PANDUR EVO takes place in a specially established PANDUR user group with the following members: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Portugal, Slovenia.

All-terrain vehicle ready for Austria [ES18D5]
The first Austrian BvS 10 completed its winter testing as part of trials in the Alps earlier this year and the first production vehicles will be delivered to Austria in July 2018, with deliveries running until 2019.

On arrival in Austria, they will be fitted with government furnished equipment, including the locally supplied ESL Advanced Information Technology remote controlled weapon station, which can be armed with a 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun or a 40mm automatic grenade launcher. On the lower part of the weapon station are banks of 76mm grenade launchers.

Other government furnished equipment will include a communications system and a colour camera to provide 360° situational awareness. The baseline vehicle has four seats in the front and six seats in the rear, but the rear unit can be rapidly reroled.

It is also fitted with a fire detection and suppression system, air conditioning, NBC system, external stowage boxes and ski racks. Some of the Austrian vehicles will be fitted with a front-mounted snow-clearing blade.

The gross vehicle weight is being quoted as 16 tonnes, which is too heavy for amphibious use, but a swimming kit can be supplied for use when the vehicle is operating at a lower weight.

Austria will soon receive its first BvS10
Brig.Gen. Kollman said that the number of vehicles does not fulfill the needs of a battalion, and said that the week following Eurosatory the Austrian Army will finalise which set of vehicles would be needed to complete a battalion.

Austria also required minor changing, such as a flip on cover that avoids somebody from outside to block the door with a padlock, the vehicle having anyway a backup exit system; this is to cope with riot control situations, which often happen when operating downrange. As for the dozer blade, this is the same adopted by France, the link among BvS10 users being the BvS10 Users Group, currently including Austria, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United Kingdom
