IAPUNIT – Development of an innovative auxiliary power unit for military purposes based on high-temperature PEM fuel cell and reforming technology for military logistic fuels

Bild
The project concerns the development of a silent power solution with a low IR-signature for the energy supply of military land vehicles. An inline desulphurisation unit based on the industrial hydrodesulphurisation (HDS) process will be developed. The resulting fuel will then be fed into an autothermal reformer (ATR). Afterwards it is converted into hydrogen-rich fuel by a two-stage water-gas-shift reaction (WGS). The gas obtained is now transferred to the anode of the HT-PEM fuel cell. Long-term tests and start-stop cycles with hydrogen with impurities (carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide) are carried out. The influence of impurities is investigated by regularly recording a polarization curve and additional electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Within these tests, limits for the tolerance of the cell against the investigated impurities shall be determined so that requirements for the fuel processor can be given.

Power management in terms of software and hardware architecture to manage new consumers like electromagnetic guns or electric armor or new solutions for energy generation based on high-temperature PEM fuel cell and reforming technology for the land vehicles are addressed by PMLP[4] study and IAPUNIT[5] project respectively. Hybrid drive and contributing component technologies (like batteries, motors, power electronics, energy management etc.) have evolved fast over the last couple of years. The main driver for the development has been the civil market with its demand for capable and efficient drive trains, especially for cars and utility vehicles. Against this background and by considering future military needs the question comes up, to what extend these new technologies are suitable to cover future military mobility needs. This question will be addressed by HybriDT[6] project.

In 2018 we also collaborate in a new international project IAPUNIT, which is being implemented within the framework of the European Defence Agency (EDA). The project aims to develop an auxiliary fuel source for the fuel cells for military vehicles using F-34 military diesel fuel. This fuel is particularly problematic for usage in fuel cells due to impurities and, accordingly, an adjustment of the fuel processor’s design is needed. The motivation for the project is to increase the energy efficiency, reduce noise levels, reduce thermal footprint and reduce pollution – all this in comparison to existing conventional diesel generators.
