Air Force conducts successful hypersonic weapon flight test
The U.S. Air Force successfully conducted the first flight test of its AGM-183A Air Launched Rapid Response Weapon, or ARRW, on a B-52 Stratofortress aircraft on June 12 at Edwards Air Force Base, California.

A sensor-only version of the ARRW prototype was carried externally by a B-52 during the test to gather environmental and aircraft handling data.

The test gathered data on drag and vibration impacts on the weapon itself and on the external carriage equipment of the aircraft. The prototype did not have explosives and it was not released from the B-52 during the flight test. This type of data collection is required for all Air Force weapon systems undergoing development.

“We’re using the rapid prototyping authorities provided by Congress to quickly bring hypersonic weapon capabilities to the warfighter,” said Dr. Will Roper, assistant secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics. “We set out an aggressive schedule with ARRW. Getting to this flight test on time highlights the amazing work of our acquisition workforce and our partnership with Lockheed Martin and other industry partners.”

The Air Force is leading the way in air-launched hypersonic weapon prototyping efforts. As one of two rapid prototyping hypersonic efforts, ARRW is set to reach early operational capability by fiscal year 2022.
The flight test serves as the first of many flight tests that will expand the test parameters and capabilities of the ARRW prototype.

The ARRW rapid prototyping effort awarded a contract in August 2018 to Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, Orlando, Florida, for critical design review, test and production readiness support to facilitate fielded prototypes.

Air Force awards hypersonic weapon contract (13. August 2018)
Today the Air Force has awarded a contract not to exceed $480,000,000 to Lockheed Martin Missiles & Fire Control to begin designing a second hypersonic weapon prototype.

This contract will provide the critical design review, test and production readiness support for the Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW).
The ARRW effort is one of two hypersonic weapon prototyping efforts being pursued by the Air Force to accelerate hypersonic research and development. The Air Force is using rapid prototyping authorized by Section 804 of the FY16 National Defense Authorization Act to explore the art-of-the-possible and to advance these technologies to a capability in 2021.

Leaders from the Department of Defense, Missile Defense Agency, Air Force, Navy and Army signed a memorandum of agreement June 28 to work cooperatively on hypersonic boost glide technology development.
This undefinitized contract action allows the government to meet urgent needs by authorizing the contractor to begin work before reaching a final settlement on contract terms and conditions, to include a final negotiated price. The contract is expected to be definitized within 180 days of award.

The Air Force's other hypersonic weapon rapid prototyping effort is called the Hypersonic Conventional Strike Weapon (HCSW). The ARRW and HCSW efforts are developing unique capabilities for the warfighter and each has different technical approaches. The ARRW effort is "pushing the art-of-the-possible" by leveraging the technical base established by the Air Force/DARPA partnership. The HCSW effort is using mature technologies that have not been integrated for an air-launched delivery system.

The Armament Directorate of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center is providing program management of these prototyping efforts.

The OpFires Integrated Weapon System task will be a three-phased effort to design, develop and flight test an end-to-end demonstration system enabling a novel ground-launched system for tactical weapons deployment.

  • A. OpFires Program Background and Overview

    The United States ground-based forces are currently limited in effective range of surface-to-surface precision fires. The OpFires program seeks to provide operational/theater level commanders with flexible capabilities to strike time-sensitive targets while providing persistent standoff from unpredictable land-launch positions. This flexibility would restore combatant commander options in force deployment and employment, enabling adaptable engagement at extended ranges.

    The overarching goal of the OpFires program is to develop and demonstrate a novel ground-launched system enabling hypersonic boost-glide weapons to penetrate modern enemy air defenses and rapidly and precisely engage critical time-sensitive targets. Specific capability objectives for the OpFires system and components are in the classified annex to this BAA. DARPA-CG-969 Rev. 1 provides instructions and guidelines on the classification/declassification of information and material associated with the OpFires program. Instructions for requesting the Classification Guide and classified annex are in Section IV., Application and Submission Information.

    The OpFires program includes three main elements:

    (1) This Integrated Weapon System BAA, referred to as Phase 3, focused on developing an operational system design and leveraging the innovative propulsion solutions under development in the Propulsion System task. This design will inform a prototype missile system suitable for integrated flight testing to demonstrate the end-to-end OpFires system. Proposals submitted for this effort must address the full scope of the program described herein.

    (2) The ongoing Propulsion System task, referred to as Phases 1 and 2, which is developing innovative propulsion solutions for an advanced tactical weapon system. Government Furnished Information (GFI) resulting from this effort may be provided to OpFires Integrated Weapon System task awardees.

    (3) A completed study to inform system and launcher characteristics. Details may be found in the classified annex to this BAA.

    For clarity and consistency, the OpFires program will use the following system and component definitions:
    • Payload – the hardware that will separate from the booster and execute the flight to target;
    • Booster – all propulsion associated hardware that is launched from the ground vehicle including: control actuator system (CAS), the rocket motor/engine(s), interstage hardware, nozzles and separation systems. Does not include the shroud or payload;

Expanded carriage demonstration showcases possible B-1B capability (6. September 2019)

The 412th Test Wing, along with Air Force Global Strike Command and industry partners, held an expanded carriage demonstration with the B-1B Lancer bomber at Edwards Air Force Base, California, Aug. 28.

The demonstration showcased the feasibility of increasing the B-1B weapons capacity to integrate future advanced weapons.

The two potential programs – external carriage and long bay options – would allow the B-1B to carry weapons externally, significantly increasing its magazine capacity for munitions, as well as adding larger, heavier munitions, such as hypersonic weapons.
Ross said the expanded capabilities will be conventional only, keeping the aircraft compliant with New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or New START.

Lockheed Martin has been awarded nearly USD1 billion for the critical design review, test, and production readiness support of the AGM-183A Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) air-to-surface hypersonic weapon.

Announced by the US Department of Defense (DoD) on 2 December, the award for Lockheed Martin Missile and Fire Control is valued at USD988.93 million and definitises the contract terms, specifications, and price of the project. USD23 million has been obligated to date. Work will be performed at Orlando, Florida, and is expected to be completed by 31 December 2022.

Hypersonic tests, modernization top Army budget request
The Army will test-fire multiple land-based hypersonic missiles later this year, said Secretary of the Army Ryan D. McCarthy, as leaders zero in on their 2023 goal to deliver high-speed munitions that "fly further, hit their targets, and increase reach and lethality" to the joint fight.

Department of Defense Tests Hypersonic Glide Body

The Department of Defense successfully tested a hypersonic glide body in a flight experiment conducted from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai, Hawaii, March 19 at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time (HST).

The U.S. Navy and U.S. Army jointly executed the launch of a common hypersonic glide body (C-HGB), which flew at hypersonic speed to a designated impact point.

Concurrently, the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) monitored and gathered tracking data from the flight experiment that will inform its ongoing development of systems designed to defend against adversary hypersonic weapons.

Information gathered from this and future experiments will further inform DOD's hypersonic technology development, and this event is a major milestone towards the department's goal of fielding hypersonic warfighting capabilities in the early- to mid-2020s.

''This test builds on the success we had with Flight Experiment 1 in October 2017, in which our C-HGB achieved sustained hypersonic glide at our target distances,'' said Vice Adm. Johnny R. Wolfe, Director, Navy's Strategic Systems Programs, which is the lead designer for the C-HGB. ''In this test we put additional stresses on the system and it was able to handle them all, due to the phenomenal expertise of our top notch team of individuals from across government, industry and academia. Today we validated our design and are now ready to move to the next phase towards fielding a hypersonic strike capability.''
The C-HGB – when fully fielded – will comprise the weapon's conventional warhead, guidance system, cabling, and thermal protection shield. The Navy and Army are working closely with industry to develop the C-HGB with Navy as the lead designer, and Army as the lead for production. Each service will use the C-HGB, while developing individual weapon systems and launchers tailored for launch from sea or land.

Mission Space

Operational testing of hypersonic weapons, directed-energy systems, and autonomous and unmanned vehicles is either now underway or planned in the near future. Adequate operational testing will require long-range corridors that are in excess of currently available air, land, and sea space. The Department continues to be concerned about increased development in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, where the existing statutory Moratorium on oil and gas development expires in 2022. The Department is also concerned about certain areas of the mid-Atlantic and off the coast of California, which are being considered for wind power development.

Future Hypersonics Program
The Department of Defense, United States Air Force (USAF), Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC), Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC), Armament Directorate, is currently conducting market research seeking capabilities statements from potential sources, including small businesses (SB), 8(a), HUBZone, Economically Disadvantaged Woman-Owned (EDWOSB), Woman-Owned (WOSB), Service Disabled Veteran Owned (SDVOSB) small businesses for an effort involving systems integration of a Weapon Open System Architecture (WOSA)-based, solid-rocket boosted, air-breathing, hypersonic conventional cruise missile, air-launched from existing fighter/bomber aircraft into a preliminary design. The effort involves the use of Digital Engineering (DE) and Model-Based Engineering (MBE) practices for requirements, design, trade studies, and analyses; as well as the use of DE/MBE to accomplish technical planning for qualification, component/subsystem testing, manufacturing, and sustainment of the air-breathing hypersonic cruise missile under representative operational conditions. In order for a vendor to be deemed qualified, its capability statement must demonstrate its capability in the following: sustained air-breathing hypersonic propulsion (ramjet, scramjet, or dual-mode), stable hypersonic aerodynamics, aero-thermal protection systems, solid rocket motors, warhead/missile integration, advanced hypersonic guidance, navigation, and control including advanced subsystem technologies and communications, and fighter/bomber weapon integration. This weapon system must be designed and analyzed to achieve a Preliminary Design Review (PDR) in 4QFY21.

SNC Leverages VORTEX® Engine Technology for DARPA’s OpFires Program (2. April 2020)
Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC), the global aerospace and national security leader owned by Eren and Fatih Ozmen, reached a major milestone in the advancement of hypersonic propulsion with its patented VORTEX engine, advancing to the next phase of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) Operational Fires (OpFires) program.

Through OpFires, SNC is extending its hybrid VORTEX engine capabilities to advanced, deep throttling, restartable propulsion systems. The system utilizes benign solid fuel with a liquid oxidizer, both of which are storable on Earth and in space. Recent testing shows positive results in being able to package significant energy into a small volume that will have the ability for deep throttling and smooth restart capabilities on command. “The VORTEX flows integrated into the hybrid significantly improves performance of the hybrid engine” said Dr. Marty Chiaverini, director of Propulsion Systems at SNC.
The first two phases of DARPA’s OpFires program focus on the propulsion technologies required to deliver diverse payloads to a variety of ranges. Since Phase 1 contract award, SNC has made critical discoveries in advanced rocket motor technology for the OpFires upper stage, completing more than 30 motor trials from subscale through full size. SNC hopes to demonstrate these engines in flight and offer the engines to new, promising vehicle systems.

THE PRESIDENT: Well, thank you very much. I appreciate it. We’re building, right now, incredible military equipment at a level that nobody has ever seen before. We have no choice. We have to do it — with the adversaries we have out there.

We have a — I call it the “super-duper missile.” And I heard the other night, 17 times faster than what they have right now.

SECRETARY ESPER: Yes, sir.

THE PRESIDENT: And you take the fastest missile we have right now — you’ve heard Russia has five times, and China is working on five or six times. We have one 17 times. And it’s just gotten the go-ahead. Seventeen times faster, if you can believe that, General. That’s something, right? Seventeen times faster than what we have right now. Fastest in the world by a factor of almost three.

So I just want to congratulate everybody and thank everybody. Space is going to be — it’s going to be the future, both in terms of defense and offense and so many other things.

And already, from what I’m hearing and based on reports, we’re now the leader in space, and that took place. Don’t forget, we’re having a meeting today. This is really to unfurl the flag. But we’ve been doing this now for quite a while. I have to say that from my standpoint, having a force — a space force, in this case, but to be adding to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which I’ve known about and read about and heard about all my life — just like General Milley to be the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is something that’s a very special thing.

Well, to add another force into the Joint Chiefs and — and we’re getting a four star. In this case, we’re getting a four-star general on your board. So we’re doing something — right here. So we’re doing something that is such a monumental task.

So it’s been more than 72 years. The Air Force, I believe, was the last one. And so we have Air Force. And not since the Air Force has anything like this happened, and now we have Space Force added on with — with full honors, I must add. With full honors.

So today, we’re here for a very important — it’s really an important occasion because we’re unfurling the flag. And with us is Chief Master Sergeant Roger Towberman. And he is — I’d like you to say exactly, because his rank is a very special rank. Tell us about that rank.
