- AV TECHNOLOGY INTRODUCES AGMS PANDUR TO THE U.S. ARMY -

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Today, the first Armored Ground Mobility System (AGMS) Pandur was introduced to the United States Army during a ceremony at AV Technology, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics Land Systems.

AV Technology produces the Pandur in the United States under license from the vehicle designer, Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug AG & Co KG (SSF) of Vienna, Austria. AV Technology and SSF partnered in 1994.

Introduction of the Pandur into the U.S. Army's inventory comes just one year after the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) awarded AV Technology a competitive procurement, indefinite quantity, five year contract for up to 50 Pandur AGMS vehicles.

"This milestone event is a result of the excellent teamwork between TACOM, AV Technology, and SSF," said Simon T. Honess, president of AV Technology.

The AGMS program follows the production of 70 Pandur vehicles in six different configurations at AV Technology for the Kuwait National Guard between 1997 and 1999. Pandur is also fielded by the armed forces of Austria, Belgium, and Slovenia.

"Pandur represents a new class of vehicle for America's Army. Pandur is mission driven and gives the Army an armored rapid response vehicle that is air deployable, mobile, agile, and versatile with significant protection features," said Honess. " Pandur favors operations in mountainous terrain or urban areas where agility and maneuverability over or around obstacles are vital prerequisites for mission success. The vehicle strongly reflects the direct design influence of the Army user."

The Pandur's AGMS superior technology includes features such as advanced armor, automatic drive management, independent suspension, central tire inflation, quick-change powerpack, and disk brakes.

In the AGMS configuration, Pandur is an armored personnel carrier. Pandur can also be configured in several additional variants including 25mm or 30mm fighting vehicles, 90mm fire support, Hellfire missile, mortar, command and control, NBC reconnaissance, ambulance, and maintenance recovery.

"General Dynamics and Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug are working together to jointly offer the Pandur as a candidate vehicle for the U.S. Army's Interim Armored Vehicle program," said Honess. "We feel the Pandur provides the U.S. Army an excellent choice to help equip their Brigade Combat Teams."

AV Technology, a General Dynamics company, is a world leader in the design and manufacture of armored wheeled vehicles and turret systems.

General Dynamics Land Systems is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD). General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, employs approximately 43,000 people worldwide and has annualized sales of approximately $10 billion. The company has leading market positions in shipbuilding and marine systems, land and amphibious combat systems, information systems, and business aviation.

Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug AG & Co KG is a privately owned, traditional European producer of light wheeled and tracked armored vehicles, with headquarters in Vienna, Austria. STEYR was founded back in 1864. General Dynamics has a share participation of about 25% in STEYR.

STEYR's main field of activities are the development, production, and international marketing of its
  • PANDUR 6x6 range of wheeled armored vehicles, and
  • ASCOD range of tracked armored vehicles, developed together with Santa Barbara of Spain.
STEYR armored vehicles are in service in five continents and presently in production in Austria, USA, Belgium, Spain, and Slovenia.

Pandur

Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug AG (STEYR) of Austria, a privately owned shareholding company of which General Dynamics owns 25%, developed the Pandur family of combat vehicles. AV Technology, a General Dynamics company, is the United States licensee. STEYR owns the full industrial and intellectual property rights. About 2,500 STEYR Pandur 6x6 wheeled armored vehicles are in service world wide, more than 700 in NATO countries. The vehicle was released for marketing in its present configuration in 1994. The same year the first contract with the Austrian Army was signed for 68 vehicles. In October 1996, the first export order was achieved for 70 Pandur 6x6 vehicles with the Kuwait National Guard, followed by an order of 54 Pandurs by the Armed Forces of Belgium. In 1998, after more than two years of evaluation by the U.S. Army, AV Technology was awarded a contact with options for up to 50 Pandur 6x6 armored ground mobility systems. Delivery of four Pandurs, produced in parallel with STEYR, is complete. An option for eight vehicles was executed in the 2nd Quarter of 2000.

The Pandur is a six-wheeled, multi-functional vehicle capable of operating on road, off road, in hilly terrain, cross-country, night or day. It can carry up to 12 soldiers with equipment in the armored personnel carrier variant. The use of a unique Land System applique armor package, seat shock-mitigation attachments and armor enclose power pack, provide superior protection for the crew against mines and armor-piercing projectiles. Other design features include run-flat tires, steerable front axle sets, central tire inflation system and a thermally isolated exhaust system. Its inherent design, size and characteristics permit customization into more than 12 configurations. These include a 25mm reconnaissance variant, anti-tank guided missile carrier, 90-mm fire support vehicle, 81-mm mortar carrier, command and control, and ambulance variants.

U.S. Special Operators seeking information from contractors for new armored vehicles
February 25, 2020

U.S. Special Operations Command earlier this month issued a request for information to identify contractors capable of developing and supply of a nine to eleven passenger armored ground tactical vehicle capable of being Internally Air Transportable (IAT) in a C-130 aircraft.

According to a notice posted to the U.S. government’s main contracting website, the purpose of this request is to determine the types, suitability, and maturity levels of armored vehicles available in the marketplace. Respondents shall provide feedback regarding the feasibility and risk levels of meeting the requirements outlined below with an existing mature vehicle, any driving costs or schedule factors, and/or any additional information that would clarify current Industry capabilities.

The Key Performance Parameters for JAGMS are as follows:
  • JAGMS shall have the capacity to transport nine (9) to eleven (11) operators.
  • JAGMS shall be C-130 transportable without the need for modification.
  • JAGMS shall meet the Survivability requirements listed in the Survivability Requirements Annex (Classified SECRET).
Currently, the U.S. Special Forces operate 6×6 Austrian-designed wheeled armored vehicles called the Armored Ground Mobility System (AGMS).

The AGMS is a six-wheeled, rapidly-deployable armored personnel carrier, providing heavy weapons capability, ballistic protection, and increased transportability options for special operations forces (SOF). Developed on the Pandur base, the advanced light armored vehicle can transport up to 7 troops plus its commander and driver.

According to the open sources, to date, United States Special Operations Command operates 12 6×6 AGMS armored personnel carriers as manufactured by General Dynamics Land Systems. Vehicles provide physical and electronic warfare protection solutions against improvised explosive devices, while also providing fire support capabilities including 12.7mm heavy machine guns and 40mm automatic grenade launchers.
