The vessels has been equipped to bee able to cooperate with other parts of the Armed Forces that occur in the maritime area, such as the air force, coast guard, civil protection, customs, police and civilian shipping. The Visby corvettes will also be able to behave in particular as a good management of resources for long-term efforts at sea.

“To succeed, we have forced several technical barriers. The main challenges have been in three areas: surface vessels in composite materials, extremely low signatures and integration of sensors for a common situation picture. This technical complexity of the development project Visby has contributed to delays in delivery of the vessels, "says Mats Elofsson.

The two ships which are now handed over is equipped with over-water and underwater sensors and are in this version (version four) able to be operational in a number of national and international tasks.

When the first Visby corvettes will be delivered in version five in 2012, there will be trained crews available. The ships have since been supplemented by including mine clearance systems, helicopter landing capability, anti-surface ship missile and additional stealth adaption.

Most of the technology in the Visby corvette is developed in Sweden in cooperation between the Armed Forces, the Defense Materiel Administration (FMV), the Defense Research Agency (FOI), Swedish and foreign defence industries and universities.

CybAero Apid 60 to be tested on Swedish corvettes

Bild

CybAero’s Apid 60 unmanned air vehicle is to undergo testing on board the Swedish navy’s Visby-class corvette, following a downselection by the Swedish defence materiel administration (FMV).

Taking place in the third quarter of 2015, the testing will use the unmanned vertical take-off and landing UAV to explore the potential implementation of an aircraft of this type on to the Swedish vessels.

Swedish navy leadership reaffirms case for Visby air-defence missile fit

The Royal Swedish Navy's (RSwN's) most senior officer is continuing to make the case for the retrofit of an anti-air guided-weapon capability for its Visby-class corvettes, despite an absence of funding in the government's latest five-year defence bill.

Chief of Staff Rear Admiral Jan Thörnqvist told IHS Jane's that there was "still an operational need" to equip the Visby class with a shipborne surface-to-air missile system, adding that the navy was "trying to squeeze this into our plans for the future".

Plans to equip the RSwN's five Visby-class vessels with a vertically-launched point-defence missile system were originally developed in the mid-2000s. Following an evaluation of various options, Sweden's Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) baselined Denel's Umkhonto-IR system.

However, funding cuts announced in September 2008 saw the projected anti-air missile procurement shelved. Furthermore, while the Defence Bill 2016-2020 presented to parliament on 23 April has increased overall funding for the armed forces, no money has been included to upgrade the Visby-class anti-air capability.

Speaking to IHS Jane's at Karlskrona naval base on 29 April, Rear Adm Thörnqvist said the requirement to improve the Visby's anti-air capability had already been studied extensively and was well-recognised. "The class have a good self-defence capability with their 57 mm Mk 3 gun and soft-kill, and also have the benefit of a very low signature," he said. "However, it is hard to protect anyone else without air-defence missiles.

"So there is still an operational need, but at present no funding. It remains to be seen if there is any change in priorities, given the more challenging security situation we now find ourselves in."

Space and weight already exists in the Visby-class design for a vertical launcher installation in the internal weapon deck. "There is already a hatch in the flight deck and we have kept the [weapon deck] space below clear," said Rear Adm Thörnqvist. "One important issue is that we would want an installation that would not compromise or affect the low signature of the platform."
