Russian Helicopters, a subsidiary of state technology corporation Rostec, said the flying lab was developed on the basis of the Mil Mi-24 (NATO reporting name Hind) attack helicopter.

"The demonstration is an experimental aircraft, a flying laboratory designed for full-scale flight tests of the rotary-winged aircraft’s main rotor systems," the company’s press service announced Monday.

The company added that main changes to the aircraft included the installation of a new rotor based on recent advances in aerodynamics, durability and production technology.

The so-called flying lab will allow the company to test its main rotor blades, wing variety aerodynamic configurations, as well as vibration and stress levels during high-speed flight.

Russian Helicopters added that one of the main steps in the advanced development of the new high-speed helicopter was to increase helicopter speeds up to 400 kilometers per hour (248 miles per hour) in the first stage, then up to nearly 280 mph in subsequent stages.

The Mil Mi-24 helicopter currently has a maximum speed of 208 mph.

Russia’s quiet military revolution and what it means for Europe

Gustav Gressel
12th October, 2015

Zitat:
Putin’s expansionist policy in Russia’s neighbourhood is backed up by a poised and professional military thanks to Russia’s most significant military reforms since the 1930s.

ECFR Visiting Fellow Gustav Gressel, asserts that reforms initiated in response to the blundering invasion of Georgia in 2008, have left Russia with a military that would make short work of any of its neighbours, were they left isolated by their Western allies, though he calls into question Russia’s capacity in Syria.

Gressel argues that many Western policy makers, have been lulled into a false sense of security by focussing primarily on the military hardware component of Russian military modernisation. Rather, Gressel focusses on administrative and training reforms that have trimmed the size of Russia’s top heavy armed forces, producing a group of smaller, more mobile, and more versatile military units.

And Russian military planning, including war games incorporating limited use of tactical nuclear weapons, shows that this is firmly aimed at EU and NATO members. A succession of war games have simulated Russian attacks on Poland, the Baltic states and Finland, with one - ‘Zapad 2013’ – postulating a Russian military response to unspecified Baltic ‘terrorists’ taking control of Belarus.

While Gressel argues that a major military escalation of this nature is not imminent, he also claims that it cannot be ruled out. Europe should, therefore, be prepared to handle hybrid scenarios that combine conventional and non-conventional warfare. He contends that its response should incorporate procedures from both stabilisation or crisis intervention operations as well as traditional defence, because the geographic reality and strategic uncertainty demands rapid deployment as well as military strength. Europe also needs to rebuild its administrative and logistical apparatus to support major military operations in eastern Europe, that has been degraded since 1989.

Neu sind im wesentlichen die Sensoren am Heckausleger und das Radar am Hauptrotor. Der übliche Täuschkörperwerfer an der Spitze des Waffenträgers ist außerdem nicht montiert.

Russia to replace current 'light fighters' with MiG-35

Zitat:
The Russian air force is to replace all of its current 'light' combat aircraft fleets with the newly unveiled MiG-35 'Fulcrum-F', state media quoted a senior service official as saying on 27 January.

Speaking at the public unveiling of the MiG-35 by the United Air Corporation (UAC), Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) commander-in-chief Colonel General Viktor Bondarev said that all of the service's light fighters will be replaced by the latest-variant Flanker in the coming years, the TASS news agency reported.

While the general did not specify which particular aircraft he was referring to when talking about 'light fighters', it was likely a reference to the MiG-29 'Fulcrum' from which the MiG-35 is derived. According to IHS Jane's World Air Forces, the VKS currently has about 350 MiG-29s (of which about 200 are thought to be in storage).

Zitat:
The general was making his comments on the occasion of the MiG-35's rollout for president Vladimir Putin, who noted the type's export potential with those countries that already operate the MiG-29. Russia first revealed its plans to field a new light fighter as a cost effective but capable secondary combat aircraft for the VKS in December 2013.

Russia's Putin drafts new rearmament program

Zitat:
As part of an ongoing evaluation of Russian procurement priorities over the next decade, President Vladimir Putin has officially postponed the development of a new aircraft carrier and a new class of nuclear-powered destroyers for the Russian Navy.

The decision to postpone these two flagship projects for the Russian Navy were reported by Russian daily Kommersant in mid-May, following a meeting between Putin and military leaders dedicated to drafting a rearmament agenda through 2025.

Zitat:
The document reportedly calls for the completion of three intercontinental ballistic missile development programs: the RS-26 Rubezh (a development of the Yars-M), RS-28 Sarmat and the rail-based Bagruzin by 2020.

While the full scope of the 2025 program remains unknown, it will continue to focus on the procurement of fighter aircraft such as the Sukhoi Su-30 and Su-35 Flanker derivatives, as well as larger orders of the new T-50 stealth fighter, Kommersant reported. Development of a new long-range bomber is also expected while production of the Tupolev Tu-160 is relaunched.

As for the Navy, the 2025 program will again prioritize the construction of new nuclear submarines and small (no larger than frigate-type) surface combatants. Although Russia’s new Borei- and Yasen-class submarine fleets have yet to be completed, the 2025 program calls for a new fifth-generation ballistic missile submarine known as the Husky class.

Zitat:
Surface combatants have again taken a backseat to the submarine fleet. This is only partly due to the historical priority submarines have held in the Russian Navy. Russia simply doesn’t have the shipyard capacity for large surface ships (most large Soviet ships were built in Ukraine) or the engineering know-how for reliable diesel-powered turbines (also built in Ukraine).
