Serbia upgrades MiG-29s

At least EUR185 million (USD208 million) will be invested throughout the coming years in the general overhaul, lifecycle extension, and modernisation of 10 Serbian Air Force MiG-29 fighters, assisted by Russia.

The aircraft involved are four existing Serbian examples (three MiG-29B single-seat fighters and a single MiG-29UB twin-seat trainer) and six examples donated by Russia (one MiG-29A and three MiG-29S single-seat fighters and a pair of twin-seat MiG-29UB trainers) that are now scheduled to be delivered to Serbia by Russian transport aircraft during the summer.

The aim is to bring all 10 aircraft up to the MiG-29SM standard and increase their service life in Serbia beyond 2030.

Serbia deploys upgraded BOV light armoured vehicles

Bild

An undisclosed number of the Serbian Land Forces' 4x4 BOV light armoured vehicles (LAVs) have been upgraded by the Serbian Military Technical Institute (MTI) to extend their operational lives. The improved vehicles have been designated the BOV M-16.

The upgrade package includes the installation of a new communications system comprising high and very high-frequency radios, a heating and air-conditioning system, day and thermal cameras to enable the driver to manoeuvre the vehicle in a wider range of weather conditions, and an automatic fire-detection and suppression system.

An auxiliary power unit (APU) has been mounted externally on the rear of the hull, which provides up to eight hours of power for the vehicle's mission systems - such as communications equipment when the vehicle is configured for the command-post role - even with the main diesel engine shut down.

For enhanced survivability, the BOV M-16 has been fitted with an appliqué armour package for a higher level of ballistic protection.

A number of the vehicles have been fitted with the M15 remote-controlled weapon station (RCWS), armed with a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun (HMG). This is provided with 180 rounds of ready-use ammunition fed from a box on the weapon's left side with the day/night sensor pod mounted on the right.

Other BOV M-16 vehicles have been fitted with a protected weapon station (PWS) armed with either a 7.62 mm MG or 12.7 mm HMG. The station is mounted on the front-right of the vehicle, next to the driver's station.

More recent versions of the BOV M-16 include a target-acquisition model which is fitted with appliqué armour, PWS, and a telescopic mast to which an all-weather sensor package - comprising day and thermal cameras and a laser rangefinder - is attached.

Serbia fields Hemera artillery detection system

Bild

The Serbian Armed Forces is testing a new artillery sound ranging system called Hemera, which has been developed under the leadership of the Military Technical Institute (MTI) with production to be undertaken by undisclosed members of the Serbian defence industry.

The system, which is transported in a 4x4 Steyr-Daimler-Puch Pinzgauer light vehicle, comprises the operator's station, processing equipment, and acoustic sensors.

Each sensor pod contains four acoustic sensors, and a maximum of six pods can be connected together to extend its coverage.

The acoustic sensors determine the source of artillery projectiles, mortar projectiles, and artillery rockets by measuring the differences in the time of arrival between them.

This information is then processed and fed into the artillery command and control system to direct counterbattery fire against the threats. The data can also be used to pinpoint the projected impact of hostile fire.

According to the MTI the maximum range of the Hemera system is 30 km, although effective range is dependent on a number of factors including terrain and propagation.

MTI also claims that the system has a high probability of detection out to a range of 15 km and is capable of operating in all weather conditions.

Serbia showcases upgraded BVP M-80AB1 IFV

Bild

Bild

The Military Technical Institute (MTI) of the Republic of Serbia has unveiled a prototype of its upgraded BVP M-80A tracked infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). The upgraded vehicle has been designated the BVP M-80AB1.

A new passive applique armour package has been fitted to the hull and turret to provide an enhanced level of survivability. MTI claims that the armour package is effective against 30 mm armour-piercing (AP) projectiles over the frontal arc, 14.5 mm AP projectiles over the sides, and 7.62 mm AP projectiles to the rear.

The upgraded vehicle retains the same layout as the original production BVP M-80A IFV with the driver located on the front left and the vehicle commander to the immediate rear.

The turret is located in the middle of the hull with the troop compartment extending to the rear.

The one-person turret has been fitted with applique armour, a new 30 mm cannon, as well as a 7.62 mm machine gun (MG).

The turret is fitted with new gun control equipment and the new day/night optronics package can detect targets out to a range of 2,000 m under most weather conditions.

Two 82 mm electrically operated smoke grenade launchers are mounted on either side of the turret but at present these are not linked to any laser detectors to provide a baseline defensive aids system.

The vehicle on display was fitted with two of the latest indigenous Maljutka 2T5 anti-tank guided weapons (ATGWs).

The 2T5, which has already undergone initial firing trials, features a semi-automatic command-to-line of sight (SACLOS) guidance system and has a maximum range of up to 5,000 m at a maximum velocity of 200 m/s.

It is fitted with a 140 mm diameter tandem high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead, which is claimed to be capable of penetrating 1,000 mm of rolled homogenous armour protected by explosive reactive armour (ERA).

M15 RCWS equips Serbian armed forces vehicles

The M15 remote controlled weapon station (RCWS) has entered service with the Serbian armed forces, Yugoimport representatives have confirmed.

The Majkik d.o.o-developed system has been observed fitted to some of the latest locally designed and built armoured vehicles, including the Lazar III (8x8) multirole armoured combat vehicle and BOV (4x4) light armoured vehicle.

For trials purposes the M15 has also been fitted to the turret of the upgraded M-84AS1 main battle tank and the Milosh (4x4) multi-purpose armoured vehicle, which is undergoing trials.

The M15 RCWS is currently armed with a modernised 12.7 mm NSV belt-fed machine gun (MG), which is provided with a box of 180 rounds of ready-use ammunition.

Yugoimport is claiming a maximum effective range against aerial targets of up to 1,500 m and ground targets of 2,000 m, with a cyclic rate of fire of more than 600 rds/min. There is the potential for alternative weapons to be installed, such as a smaller calibre 7.62 mm MG.

The RCWS’ Sensor pod is mounted on the left side and consists of a high-resolution charged coupled device (CCD) TV camera with x36 zoom, a thermal imaging night camera, and an eye-safe laser rangefinder. The latter has a range of between 80 m and 5,000 m and is stated to have an accuracy of 5 m; it feeds information to the fire control computer (FCC).

The FCC processes the video, generates an automatic reticule, and calculates the ballistics and lead angle. The weapon is laid onto the target using a flat panel display and associated controls, which include a single joystick.

The M15 has an electric traverse (through 360°) and elevation (-7° to 60°) system.
