The Polish defence industry will reveal a new PT-16 main battle tank on 6-9 September at the MSPO International Defence Industry Exhibition, which takes place in Kielce.

    Zitat:
The PT-16 is the latest version of the Polish PT-91 main battle tank and based on the T-72 chassis. The new PT-16 tank is armed with a 120mm calibre gun that can fire standard NATO ammunition as well as the latest natures such as the DM11 high-explosive with a programmable fuze and DM63 APFSDS.

The new turret has to include a new autoloader to load the longer 120 x 570 mm unitary catridges for Rheinmetall’s smoothbore gun design; how exactly this has been solved by the Polish engineers is unknown, but the Anders light tank and the Pl-01 concept tank utilized bustle mounted autoloaders.

The new tank powered by a Polish developing 1,100 horsepower (hp), which gives a maximum road speed of 65km/h.

MSPO 2016: PGZ Presents PT-16 Main Battle Tank

Bild

Bild

Zitat:
During MSPO 2016 in Kielce, Poland, PGZ (Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa) revealed a technology demonstrator of a new tank, named as the PT-16 (Polish Tank 2016). It is a modernised offering of the PT-91 TWARDY tank, which is an indigenous development of the T-72M1 tank, designed in the 1990s by two Polish companies – OBRUM and ZM Bumar-Łabędy.

Zitat:
PT-16 is an upgraded PT-91 with improved survivability, situational awareness and firepower, and is based on the chassis of the PT-91. While the old tank is equipped with the PZL-Wola S-1000R diesel engine (1000 hp, 735 kW), PGZ and its companies plan to install a new powerpack (up to 1200hp). A new tank would have additional composite armour providing a ballistic protection of approx. 100RHA. To remove weaknesses of the TWARDY tank, the PT-16 would be equipped with a modern fire-control system and a remotely controlled weapon station known as ZSMU-127 KOBUZ with either a 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun. It is not ruled out that an unmanned turret could offered.

The PT-16 would have a weight of 47,5t and a maximum speed of 70km/h.

While the PT-91 is equipped with the 2A46MS 12 mm smoothbore gun (the same that is used in the T-72), the PT-16 would be equipped with an as yet undetermined 120mm smoothbore gun (like the 120mm KBM2 from Ukraine) able to use NATO-standard ammunition, including advanced kinetic energy penetrators, such as the DM53 and its further development DM63. It is possible that the most likely weapon of choice would be the Rheinmetall L44 120mm gun, which is currently used on all Polish LEOPARD 2A4/2A5 tanks. According to information from MSPO 2016, it is planned that the Polish company HSW (Huta Stalowa Wola) would be responsible for the production of these guns.

MSPO 2016: PT-16 tank upgrade unveiled

Bild

Zitat:
Designated the PT-16, the upgrade's goal is to overcome the main weaknesses of the T-72 MBT family, namely a low power-to-weight ratio; the asymmetric location of the main gun recoil mechanism, which affects accuracy; and the fact that the magazine for the tank's two-part ammunition (projectile and propellant charge) is located in its crew compartment, resulting in a high probability of the vehicle exploding if its armour is penetrated.

Zitat:
There are several elements of a planned upgraded. The PL version is planned to have new situational awareness sensors (including a thermal camera and new observation sensors for a tank commander, a thermal camera for a gunner, and a day/night camera for a driver), electrical turret drive, hydraulic stabilization of a gun and additional armour. Poland does not plan to replace original L44 120 mm gun with a new gun, such as LEOPARD 2A6’s L55 variant. However, after an upgrade the 2PL will be able to fire DM63A1 kinetic energy rounds and DM11 HE rounds. To achieve it, the 2PL will have a fire control system upgraded as well.

New armour is designed in cooperation with IBD Deisenroth Engineering from Germany. It will be possible to easily remove armour and replace it with a new set if needed. According to the PGZ, this armour will give the turret of the 2PL better ballistic protection than in Leopard 2A5. It will be comparable with the 2A7 version, the PGZ says. At the current stage an upgrade of the communication system is not planned.

The total weight of an upgraded vehicle will go up from 55 tonnes to 59 tonnes. It is planned that the 2PL will stay in operational service for roughly 30 years. The first 2PL prototype is planned to be ready by March 2018.

Jenoptik to supply equipment with a value of 22 million euros to Poland for military land vehicles

Zitat:
Jenoptik is to supply 126 electric turret and weapon stabilization systems to the Polish company ZM Bumar Labedy S. A. as part of a modernization program for the Leopard 2 tank. The complete order amounts to 22 million euros and will be handled together with Polish subsuppliers. Delivery will be made between 2017 and 2020.

Zitat:
The contract was signed at the Polish International Defense Industry Exhibition, MSPO, in Kielce.

The all-electric stabilization systems replace the hydraulic systems used to date. They are mostly maintenance free and generate less heat inside the tank. Basically these systems adjust and stabilize the turret and weapon while the tank is in motion.

Vehicles for the Land Forces: From Leopard to Kleszcz

When it comes to the main land platform programmes, the contracted modernisation of the Leopard 2A4 tanks, with the upgrade to the Leopard 2PL standard expected, is to be finalized in the period between 2018 and 2021. What is more, works began, within the scope of two tracked-chassis platforms, the purpose of which would be to replace the T-72/PT-91 main battle tanks and BWP-1 IFVs. “Borsuk” IFV prototype is to be ready in 2019, while “Gepard” close support platform prototype – one year later. “Borsuk” procurement is scheduled to begin in 2021, and “Gepard” vehicles are to be delivered in 2022 respectively. This means that both designs face one year of delay.

Rheinmetall of Germany shows its expertise to upgrade Leopard 2 MBT tanks as the Leopard 2 PL

Bild

Zitat:
The German Company Rheinmetall exhibits the Leopard 2 PL at IDEX 2017, a complete modernization program for 128 Leopard 2 MBTs (Main Battle Tank) of Polish Armed Forces.

Zitat:
Improved survivability is one goal of the Polish modernization programme to upgrade the Leopard MBT to the new Leopard 2 PL standard. New AMAP (Advanced Modular Armour Protection) armour modules from IBD Deisenroth provide enhanced protection from KE and HE projectiles. An installation of a fire extinguisher/fire suppression system will assure optimum crew protection.

The turret will be retrofitted with electric drives, which, apart from enabling improved accuracy and helping to save space, will reduce the risk to the crew. In order to improve situational awareness to the rear of the vehicle and assist the driver, a video camera will be installed.

However, the modernization programme focuses first and foremost on upgrading the tank’s main armament and fire control technology as well as expanded use of state-of-the-art electronic components and improved force protection features.

The fire control unit will be modified through software changes to handle new ammunition types, which Rheinmetall also develops and produces for the Leopard. A latest-generation thermal imaging device will significantly expand the vehicle’s sensor capabilities. The Rheinmetall-made L44 main armament will be adapted to fire the enhanced-performance DM63A1 KE round. It will also be equipped with a programming capability that will enable it to fire multipurpose HE DM11 ammunition.

Polish Ministry of Defence: Gepard Programme Comes to an Abrupt End

Zitat:
Undersecretary of State at the Polish Ministry of Defence, Tomasz Szatkowski, within his interview for the Polish Press Agency, stated that the Polish authorities are resigning from pursuing the Gepard Close Support Vehicle programme. Szatkowski declared that modernization of the armoured units is to, in a longer run, be founded around a programme, the goal of which would be to develop a new main battle tank. Deputy Minister Szatkowski declared that resignation from development of the Close Support Vehicle is tied to the difficulties pertaining to the requirements that form a foundation for the aforesaid programme.

Polish Army to Acquire New Main Battle Tanks. Instead of Gepard?

Zitat:
The Armament Inspectorate has initiated a market analysis, related to acquisition of a new type of a main battle tank for the Polish Army. The above means that the declarations made when the Strategic Defence Review document was published, would become formalized.

According to the announcement made by the Inspectorate, the analytical-conceptual phase that has begun, concerns the potential acquisition of a main battle tank. The new platform’s purpose would be to act against armoured vehicles, armour and non-armoured assets of the enemy, and to neutralize and destroy the enemy fire units and act against the personnel. Finally, the new tank shall remain able to demolish wooden-soil, brick-laid and ferroconcrete fortifications and to neutralize airborne threats.

The vehicle is to protect its crew from onboard cannons, firearms, anti-tank grenades, mines and IEDs, and also from any other projectiles being fired by the armoured vehicles. The protection is to be provided with the use of an active vehicle protection suite.

As a result of the above, an ability to act against armour and armoured targets is to be obtained, with provided offroad mobility, with the use of tank battalion elements. The submissions for being included in market analysis are to be accepted until 30th June.

Zitat:
When it comes to the presentation of the Strategic Defence Review, Deputy Minister of Defence Tomasz Szatkowski also announced that the Ministry would resign from implementing the Gepard Close Support Vehicle Programme, with that platform being expected to replace the T-72M1 main battle tanks, with the PT-91 platform to follow. However, the assumptions behind the Gepard programme have been frequently criticized. The total mass at 35 tonnes did not make it possible to provide the vehicle with an adequate level of passive protection, comparable to the contemporary main battle tanks.

Poland reinforces armour

Zitat:
Part of the plan is to contract Rheinmetall Defence to upgrade 142 Polish Leopard 2A4s to the Leopard 2PL standard and to move heavy brigades from bases in western to central Poland.

Poland also plans to purchase additional second-hand Leopard 2 tanks. One possibility would be to buy Spanish Leopard 2A4s from Spain, Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz told Polskie Radio 24 on 30 June, in which case they would also be upgraded to the Leopard 2PL standard.

Poland is also considering buying new tanks. On 30 May, the Armament Inspectorate announced a market survey for a new-generation tank equipped with active protection systems. However, Poland is mostly interested in joining a multinational programme to develop a new generation MBT, Deputy Defence Minister Tomasz Szatkowski announced on 4 July in an interview with the Polska Zbrojna military weekly.

Poland had earlier planned to replace older T-72s with a modern fire-support vehicle armed with a 120 mm gun, but the Gepard light tank programme was cancelled. In addition, Poland is no longer interested in a wheeled tank destroyer based on the Rosomak 8x8 chassis armed with a 105 or 120 mm gun.

MSPO 2017: Polish Leopard upgrade on track

Zitat:
The first prototype Leopard 2A4 upgraded for the Polish Army has now entered verification testing in Germany, with an additional five pre-series vehicles also joining the programme effort.

Zitat:
Otmar Schultheis, the managing director of Rheinmetall Defence Polska, a dedicated Polish office set up by the German company, told Shephard that the Polish Army had already successfully carried out initial ballistic tests on the prototype platform.

‘The prototype will be handed over in the first quarter of 2018 to the Polish MoD for internal testing and acceptance,’ said Schultheis.

Serial production is expected to begin in 2018, with the first 12 vehicles planned to be produced in Poland with Rheinmetall support and overall responsibility. Beyond that, upgrade of the remaining 110 vehicles will be the responsibility of Bumar-Łabędy.

He added that the core equipment for the upgrade configuration had now been finalised, with some minor changes or additional requirements added during the testing phase.

For optics, the upgrade incorporates several technologies from local industry, a key requirement for Polish defence projects. This includes a new PERI R17A3 L4 for the commander’s sight and a EMES 15 for the gunner’s optics. Both will have the ASTERIA thermal imager and be supplied by Polish optics specialist PCO.

PCO will also supply its KDN-1 day/night camera system for the driver.

The Leopard 2PL will also feature a new electric gun and turret drive system, replacing the old hydraulic system. For increased lethality, the main weapon system will be upgraded to enable the firing of Rheinmetall’s newest tank munitions, including the DM11 120mm high-explosive round and BM63 kinetic energy round.

The DM11 is a new generation of tank round that features a programmable fuse allowing it to detonate at a specific point in the projectile's flight path. This will require the installation of new sets of ballistics data for the fire control system.

For increased protection, the Leopard 2PL will feature an updated turret with added passive armour around the front and sides bringing it up to a standard above the newer-generation Leopard 2A5/A6 variant. Protection is also enhanced though the installment of a spall liner in the turret and a fire suppression system.

Crew comfort is also addressed with the addition of an APU and additional exterior baskets and holders for equipment.
