Maritime helicopter

Danish Defence and Logistics Organization (DALO) has received replies from possible candidates for replacement of the Lynx maritime helicopters, currently in service with the Danish Defence.

Three candidates
The three proposals were received on the 28 January as replies to the DALO Request for Proposal (RFP) part 1 issued 30 September 2010. The following contractors have replied with their helicopter proposals:

EUROCOPTER - AS565 MB (Panther). Operational in the French Navy
AgustaWestland - AW-159 (Wildcat). Going into production for the Royal Army/Navy
US Navy - MH-60R (Seahawk). Operational in the United States Navy

2011-09-07 update:

Updated timeline for the Danish Maritime Helicopter acquisition program.

According to previous published timeline, DALO was to start negotiations with remaining companies at the end of September. Due to a postponement in the decision making process this milestone is moved approximately two months.

DALO now expects to have a decision in place at the end of November and start negotiations in December.

Procurement of the Danish Defence Equipment

The new helicopter will replace the LYNX Mk. 90B Naval helicopter which is more than 30 years old.

In June 2007, DALO issued a Request for Information in order to identify potential suppliers of helicopters with an already existing maritime helicopter production line or who were in the final stages of introducing a new maritime helicopter into service for another NATO country.

Four potential suppliers
On 30 September 2010, DALO issued a Request for Proposal Part 1 to four potential suppliers[1] who answered the 2007 Request for Information.

DALO wishes to procure a ‘military-off-the shelf’ helicopter, which is:

A maritime helicopter that can be used on both the Royal Danish Navy's current and future helicopter carrying units.
A helicopter going into production; from an existing production line; or already in operational use in one or more NATO countries.
A helicopter with very few or no Danish modifications.

At the same time, DALO is examining several logistical solutions ranging from the Danish Defence performing all maintenance to the supplier assuming the responsibility for the main part of all maintenance.

Denmark to narrow field in Lynx replacement contest

Denmark is expected to narrow a competition for a new maritime helicopter to two contenders during November, with the selected type likely to enter service from around 2015.

Under current plans, operations with the current Lynx fleet are expected to end in 2017. Seven are in frontline use, with an eighth having been damaged during a non-fatal accident off Greenland on 22 August.

Rivals sweeten bids for Danish maritime helicopter deal

Two main rivals for a Danish maritime helicopter replacement contract have announced new teaming arrangements in support of their promotion of the AW159 Lynx Wildcat and MH-60R Seahawk.

AgustaWestland and Sikorsky confirmed the developments in late January in the contest to replace Denmark's current Westland Lynx airframes. The companies signed a heads of agreement document with Aarhus-headquartered Systematic and a memorandum of agreement with Karup-based Aerotech, respectively.

Under the proposals, AgustaWestland will draw on Systematic's experience in command and control and electronic warfare equipment for its bid, and also promote the company's products on the international stage. Sikorsky Aerospace Services would contract Aerotech to participate in the delivery of logistics support over a 30-year period in the event of a Seahawk selection.

Denmark's Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation is expected to announce the winner of the maritime helicopter replacement programme later this year. Eurocopter's AS565 Panther has previously been named as another contender.

Nye skibsbaserede helikoptere

Denmark confirms MH-60R selection to replace Lynx helicopters

The Danish defence ministry announced the decision on 21 November, and says the government's recommendation has been passed to the finance ministry for approval.

"It is gratifying that the politicians have followed our recommendation on the maritime helicopter defence should have in the future," says chief of defence Peter Bartram in a statement.

Nine aircraft should be delivered to the Royal Danish Air Force's Karup air base between 2016 and 2018 under the acquisition, with the type to replace the service's Lynx 90B fleet in operation from 2017. Seven of the latter type are currently in use, says Flightglobal's Ascend Online Fleets database.

Danish government signs for MH-60R Seahawk helicopter (7. Dezember 2012)

The aircraft will be procured from the US Navy under a foreign military sales (FMS) agreement with the US government.

The sale will include nine MH-60R Seahawk helicopters and comprehensive logistics support at a cost of $686 million (Kr 4 billion). The Danish aircraft are configured for anti-surface warfare operations, including defending Danish interests in the North Atlantic, executing anti-piracy operations, and conducting other missions during international deployments.

The agreement makes Denmark the second country to buy MH-60R helicopters following Australia's purchase of 24 aircraft in 2011. All nine aircraft will be delivered to the Danish government by 2018.

First two Danish Seahawks near completion

The first two Lockheed Martin/Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk helicopters destined for the Royal Danish Air Force have arrived at the former’s Owego, New York site, where they will undergo mission system integration ahead of a planned delivery to the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation in 2016.

Tom Kane, director of naval helicopter programmes for Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training, tells Flightglobal that the first pair of aircraft will be delivered to the US Navy in September/October under a Foreign Military Sales agreement. They will then undergo validation testing on the Denmark-specific modifications that have been made to the rotorcraft.

The difference between this configuration and the USN's includes modifications to the deck lock system to allow the aircraft to land on Danish ships, plus the addition of a life raft and installation of a high-frequency radio common to Denmark.

The USN will provide some training to the Danish military, but a long-term training plan has yet to be decided on, Kane says.

The Seahawks will replace the Royal Danish Air Force's Westland Lynx 90Bs, which entered service in 2000.

First MH-60R set for delivery to Danish air force

A Lockheed Martin/Sikorsky team is delivering the first MH-60R to Denmark on 22 October without the AQS-22 advanced low frequency sonar.

Though standard equipment on the US Navy MH-60R fleet, the Danish Air Force omitted the capability in order to focus the fleet on other missions, such as maritime patrol, anti-surface warfare and search and rescue.

But some officials in the government may prefer to equip the aircraft for the anti-submarine warfare role as well, says Capt Kim Bo Meier, an air force systems official with the Danish defence acquisition agency.

“It would be possible to put it in the helicopter,” Meier says.

In addition to the missing sonar, the Danish variant of the helicopter also differs from the US Navy version with a UHF radio and a different deck locking system, says Lockheed Martin vice-president of Aviation and Unmanned Systems for Lockheed.

Styrket forsvar som et stærkt værn om Danmark

    http://www.fmn.dk/nyheder/Pages/styrket-forsvar-som-et-staerkt-vaern-om-danmark.aspx

The Government wishes to enhance the Danish Defence’s ability to contribute to collective deterrence and the defence of NATO by

      ▪ establishing a brigade with new and more heavy units and enhanced capabilities, including more battle tanks, ground based air-defence, anti-tank weapons and additional artillery. This will allow Denmark to deploy roughly 4,000 soldiers in a potent, independent unit with its own command structure, tanks and artillery, intelligence units and logistics by 2024.

      ▪ fitting the Royal Danish Navy’s frigates with both short-range and, eventually, long-range missiles (SM2 and SM6) to counter hostile aircraft and several types of missiles.

fitting the Royal Danish Navy’s frigates with sonar and anti-torpedo systems and its maritime helicopters with dipping sonar and torpedoes to engage in anti-submarine warfare.

      ▪ enhancing the ability of the Danish Defence and Home Guard to mobilise approx. 20,000 soldiers and deploy a supplementary reserve force of approx. 4,000 soldiers from the reserves.
