Ajax data sharing platform selected

Zitat:
Sighting systems on the British Army’s Ajax vehicle fleet will use PrismTech’s Vortex OpenSplice as the data-sharing platform. The system’s selection by Thales was announced on 21 July.

Thales is under contract with General Dynamics to supply sighting systems and ancillary equipment for the Ajax programme.

Vortex OpenSplice is a comprehensive and intelligent data-sharing platform that provides device-to-device data sharing in real time – secure, reliable delivery of voluminous data. It will enable high-level communications and interoperability between the vehicles’ advanced on-board systems.

The system is based on the Data Distribution Service (DDS) standard required by the UK Ministry of Defence’s Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) mandate.

DVD 2016: Ajax manned firing trials to start 2017

Zitat:
General Dynamics Land Systems UK (GDLS UK) has confirmed that it will commence manned firing trials of the Scout - Specialist Vehicle Ajax in early 2017.

This follows a series of unmanned firing trials at a range in Wales that were carried out between July and August this year.

Zitat:
The turret is armed with a CTAI 40 mm Case Telescoped Armament System, a 7.62 mm co-axial machine gun (MG), a Kongsberg Protector remote weapon station (RWS) that can be armed with a 7.62 or 12.7 mm MG or a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher, and banks of electrically operated grenade launchers.

Also tested in Wales was the Ares Protected Mobility Reconnaissance Support (PMRS) variant that is also fitted with a Kongsberg Protector RWS.

According to GDLS-UK, more than 400 individual tests were carried out on Ajax and Ares.

Following these firing trials the Ajax will be used for further automotive trials, cold weather trials, power systems, and trials of its ISTAR systems.

There are now three prototypes of the Ajax: one Ares PMRS, one Apollo Equipment Support - Repair, and one Atlas Equipment Support - Recovery.

The seventh prototype will demonstrate the special-to-role designs and be re-rolled from the Athena (Command and Control) to Argus (Engineering Reconnaissance) and Medical Ambulance.

Ajax uncovered: Detailing the British Army's latest combat vehicle family

Zitat:
This version of FRES SV was grander in scope than the Ajax family that has been procured, with between 1,200 and 1,300 vehicles planned in 16 variants. Notable omissions include an anti-tank mine layer; a vehicle-mounted anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) platform, a ground-based surveillance (including ground-based radar) vehicle, unit aid post and battlefield ambulance vehicles, and a direct-fire vehicle armed with a 120 mm smoothbore main gun. Although some of these capabilities are still to be acquired via other projects, including a protected battlefield ambulance and bridging vehicle under the Armoured Battlefield Support Vehicles (ABSV) programme, some of the more notable capability-enhancing variants such as the direct-fire and ATGM vehicles have no planned replacement.

Zitat:
Following the award to General Dynamics Land Systems UK (GDLS-UK) in September 2014 of a GBP3.5 billion (USD4.3 billion) contract for 589 Ajax (then the SCOUT Specialist Vehicle: [SV]) vehicles in six variants, there was a flurry of subcontract awards as suppliers were signed up to the project. This included GBP130 million to Rheinmetall for the production of turret shells, called the Turret Structure and Weapons Mount (TSWM); GBP125 million to Thales for sighting systems and ancillary equipment including the ORION primary sight, local situational awareness cameras, gunnery sights, and DNGS-T3 Stabilised Day/Night Gunnery Sight; GBP27 million to Meggitt for ammunition handling systems, and more than GBP200 million in other contracts to suppliers including Curtiss-Wright, Esterline, GKN Aerospace, Kent periscopes, Kongsberg, Marshall Aerospace and Defence, Over Oxley Group, Raytheon, Saab, Smiths Detection, ViaSat, Vitavox, Williams F1, and XPI Simulation.

An Ajax variant and Ares variant recently completed early trials, including amphibious, live firing, and automotive testing. The remaining Ajax prototypes have entered preliminary trials and will also undertake an extensive testing schedule. Following next year's manned firing trials, all variants of the Ajax are to undertake further automotive and cold weather trials, power system testing, and assessments of its extensive ISTAR systems.

Zitat:
Argus is an engineering reconnaissance platform, designed to enable combat engineer units to assess, mark, and work while under armour. Capabilities include gap and slope measurement, route marking, and demolition work, all of which can be accomplished without leaving the vehicle. Apollo is the armoured repair vehicle, and is to operate in collaboration with Atlas to provide a recovery and repair capability. It can tow other Ajax-series vehicles as well as a dedicated high-mobility trailer used to carry subassemblies for repairing vehicles in the field. Its crane can lift the Ajax powerpack, and has the less common ability to 'self-repair', being able to lift its own powerpack out of the engine compartment. Atlas is a relatively basic version of the Ajax family, mounting standard armoured recovery vehicle (ARV) equipment including two winches and an earth anchor.

The Ajax Recce/Strike vehicle is equipped with the Lockheed Martin UK Scout two-man turret. Production of the turret and weapons systems is a collaborative effort, with the primary companies responsible for components and systems being CTA International (CTAI), Curtiss-Wright, Esterline, Kongsberg, Meggitt, Moog, Rheinmetall, Thales, and Ultra Electronics.

Rheinmetall is responsible for the base steel turret structure, the cannon mounting structure, and weapon integration. The turret structure is based on the Lance Modular Turret System (MTS). CTAI covers the turret's primary armament, the 40 mm Case Telescoped Armament Systems (CTAS) gun, with the ammunition-handling system (AHS) produced by Meggitt Defense Systems. The Turret Drive Servo System (TDSS), a turret aiming and 2-axis stabilisation drive system, is produced by Curtiss-Wright. The main gun is supplemented by a co-axial Heckler & Koch L94A1 7.62 mm chain gun, four banks of four-barrel external grenade launchers supplied by Thales, and a Kongsberg Protector RWS armed with a 7.62 mm FN MAG-based general-purpose machine gun (GPMG).

Aiming and sighting systems include Esterline's crew-station displays, driver's display, and video-processing unit. Thales produces the two sighting systems and Local Situational Awareness (LSA) system. Communication between and power to the systems within the turret and the base vehicle is via a slip ring produced by Moog.

Army to slash frontline tanks

Zitat:
Army chiefs are planning to slash the number of frontline tanks by up to a third, leaving Britain with fewer tanks than Serbia.

Under the plan, one of the army’s three tank regiments will see all its 56 Challenger 2s replaced with Ajax fighting vehicles. The cut would leave the army with only about 40 more tanks than traditionally neutral Switzerland. At the other end of the scale, Russia has 2,700 tanks.

The plan, due to be announced in coming months, has alarmed serving and retired commanders and comes as Russia introduces the T-14 Armata — a new generation of tank that some experts believe has the firepower to defeat any British or American equivalent.

General Dynamics Land Systems–UK completes first AJAX programme manned live firing trial

Zitat:
General Dynamics Land Systems–UK has successfully completed initial manned live firing tests onboard an ARES vehicle, a member of the AJAX family of Armoured Fighting Vehicles, at a range in Dorset, England.

The manned firing trials tested the performance of the three weapons that can be mounted to the Kongsberg PROTECTOR Remote Weapon System: General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), Heavy Machine Gun (HMG) and Grenade Machine Gun (GMG). This was the first manned firing test for an AJAX variant.

During the trial, General Dynamics Land Systems–UK crews fired from within the vehicles to gather critical data to demonstrate the platform’s ability to accurately and consistently engage specific targets at varying distances.

Ajax makes a splash

Zitat:
The Ares variant of Ajax was recently put through its paces by 11 Amphibious Trials and Training Squadron (11 ATT Sqn) on Instow Beach in North Devon as part of the vehicle’s extensive trials programme, part of which will prove it can be transported by air, rail, road and sea.

Zitat:
At Instow on March 2nd, an Ares variant of Ajax – designed to support and carry troops – was first put through a dip tank to confirm that entry and exit angles could be negotiated and to check for any unexpected leaks.

The armoured vehicle then crossed the beach and entered the sea to prove that it could successfully traverse water obstacles
and manoeuvre on and off a landing craft with a dozer blade fitted to the front. Tie down schemes were also developed and tested dynamically on board the landing craft.

Paul Kavanagh, DE&S Demonstration Phase Project Manager for Ajax, said: “Our customer, the British Army, has a range of deployability requirements, as part of which it must be able to embark and disembark a beach landing craft with the dozer fitted to the front of Ares. These trials were critical and proved just that.

“The success is another example of DE&S working well with its stakeholders and industry to deliver successful trials.”

DSEI 2017: Ajax engine deliveries under way

Zitat:
Rolls-Royce Power Systems has delivered 75 of a total of 589 MTU 199 TE21 V-8 diesel engines ordered for the British Army’s General Dynamics Land Systems Ajax reconnaissance vehicles and variants

In this application the engine develops 600 kW (804 HP) and is coupled to a Renk 256B automatic transmission with six forward and six reverse gears, and an associated cooling system.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems is also developing an MTU Powerpack based on their Series 890 diesel engine, which is claimed to provide tracked combat vehicles with a very compact, high density unit.

Leonardo-led team to demo ‘active armour' to protect British Army vehicles and their crews against current and future weapons (13. September 2017)

Zitat:
Leonardo has been selected by the UK Government’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) to lead a team of UK companies in work that will help protect British Army vehicles against current and future weapons.

Under a Technology Demonstrator Programme (TDP) called ‘Icarus’, the team will develop and demonstrate a way to affordably integrate ‘best of breed’ technologies in a category known as ‘Active Protection Systems’ (APS), preparing them for deployment across the Army’s fleet of land vehicles.

Part of the TDP will see the Leonardo team demonstrate and evaluate an operational prototype against ‘live fire’ weapon engagements. Team members working with Leonardo to deliver the Icarus TDP are BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin UK, Ultra Electronics, Frazer-Nash, Brighton University, Abstract Solutions, Roke Manor Research and SCISYS. The project is responding to an operational environment where armour by itself will not be sufficient to defend against the capabilities of future weapon systems, in particular threats such as Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and Anti-Tank Guided Weapons (ATGW).

Zitat:
Whilst these APS technologies are currently available and will continue to be developed by industry, it is clear that no single solution is suited to every threat scenario or indeed all threats.

The key challenge is to be able to rapidly and affordably tailor a vehicle’s combination of APS technologies to optimise survivability prior to, or during, deployment.

Against this backdrop, the primary objective of the Icarus TDP is to develop and demonstrate a UK sovereign Modular, Integrated Protection System (MIPS) Electronic Architecture (EA) that enables “best of breed” APS sensors and countermeasures to be selected, integrated and deployed as necessary to defeat a wide range of current and future battlefield weapon threats. Not only must the architecture be easy to use, it must also be affordable and dependable and ultimately form the basis of a new MIPS defence standard, similar in principle to that which has been developed for the UK Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) standard.

Ministers announce Ajax delivery milestone in Wales

Zitat:
Defence Minister Harriett Baldwin and Minister for the UK Government in Wales Guto Bebb visited General Dynamics’ factory in Wales today to see two vehicles in the final stages of testing before they are delivered to the British Army.

The ministers viewed a demonstration of the new Ares protected mobility vehicle, part of the £4.5 billion Ajax family of armoured vehicles, at the factory in Merthyr Tydfil. The platforms will now continue going through a process known as Government Acceptance Training (GAT) before they are handed over to the Army.

Zitat:
The six variants in the Ajax programme – Athena, Ajax, Ares, Apollo, Atlas and Argus - are due to come into service in 2020, providing a full suite of medium armoured vehicles and capabilities. The ‘GAT’ process for the Ares platforms is now being undertaken by the Army, conducting acceptance for both the British Army and Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) at the facility in Merthyr Tydfil.

Gibt es eine Einschätzung, inwiefern man unsere Ulan auf eine (oder mehrere) der englischen Versionen upgraden könnte?
Also ein Upgrade von ASCOD 1 auf ASCOD 2 - wäre das möglich?
