Diamond Airborne Sensing takes over the first GUARDIAN

The GUARDIAN is a further major milestone in the history of Airborne Sensing. The new DA42MPP (Multi Purpose Platform) is perfectly suited for surveillance and reconnaissance missions as well as all kind of search and rescue operations.

A standard installed new Austro Engine (a Diamond’s subsidiary) diesel engine, AE300, and a fully integrated Garmin GFC700 autopilot are the main differences of the new generation MPPs to the previous version. The Austro Engine’s manufactured 170hp diesel engine has its unique features with the EECU controlled actuator, a conventional constant speed propeller governor, a high mounted turbocharger, a torsional vibration absorber and a heavy duty reduction gearbox. The main benefit of the GFC700 is the complete integration in the G1000 glass cockpit which reduces pilot’s workload dramatically - essential when the aircraft is operated in difficult environmental conditions. Flight director, yaw damper and flight level change modus set a new standard in air safety.

The universal nose, designed to carry different EO/IR gimbals up to a weight of 65kg (144lbs) as well as the belly pod, able to carry payload up to 80kg (177lbs), are already certified for the GUARDIAN. Especially for military purposes the GUARDIAN can be provided with a passive surveillance painting and the revolutionary Diamond Airborne Sensing on-top IR & Noise Reduction Kit. These special features reduce the aircraft heat and noise signature down to a level that is less noisy than a passing car and are therefore very popular with our customers.

For further improvement, Diamond Airborne Sensing’s R&D department is working on a facility to equip the GUARDIAN with a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) option for maritime purposes. Diamond Airborne Sensing is using the GUARDIAN for law enforcement live demonstrations and as a show model at aviation fairs. The new platform is also used for commissioned flight operations.

Diamond completes first DA42NG upgrade

Meanwhile, Diamond's next-generation DA42 multipurpose platform - dubbed the Guardian - has entered service with the airframer's subsidiary, Diamond Airborne Sensing.

The aircraft, which is designed for surveillance, reconnaissance and search and rescue missions is also powered by the AE300, but has a fully integrated Garmin GFC700 autopilot, flight director, yaw damper and flight level change modus. Diamond is also planing to offer a synthetic aperture radar as an option.

P.S.: Aurora’s DA42M-OPV on Track for Summer 2010 Flights (17. Februar 2010)

Aurora’s DA42M-OPV, named “Centaur”, adds an extensive suite of propriety electronics and software that retains all of the manned mission capability while also enabling the capability to conduct missions with no pilot onboard. This “optionally piloted” configuration is unique to the Aurora version of the DA42M.

“The Centaur has roughly the same payload and range performance as the MQ-1 Predator UAV,” said Aurora President John Langford, “but it has several important advantages. First, it can be flown with a pilot onboard, which will facilitate operation in the National Airspace System. Second, it has two engines, which gives greater reliability and safety. Third, the Centaur is easily reconfigurable so it can carry a variety of payloads. Finally, it has extremely low operating costs. We see it as a crossover product with enormous potential in many markets.”

Development of the Centaur began in August of 2009. The Preliminary Design Review was completed last month. Aurora expects to make its first flight in the summer of 2010 and to begin deliveries in 2011. In its manned aircraft mode, the Centaur is intended to retain the DA42’s normal-class FAA certification. When operated in the unmanned mode, it is expected to fly under an Experimental certification.

New DA42M to Serve as Optionally Piloted Aircraft (OPA) Arrives at Manassas Corporate Headquarters

The DA42M is a 4-place, twin-engine general aviation aircraft produced by Diamond Aircraft in Austria. The aircraft that will become the prototype for Aurora’s OPA was originally used by Diamond as a prototype for the DA42 Multi-Purpose Platform (MPP) development program. Over the past several months, the aircraft has been upgraded with Austro E300 heavy fuel engines.

Aurora’s DA42M-OPA, named “Centaur”, adds an extensive suite of propriety electronics and software that retains all of the manned mission capability while also enabling the capability to conduct missions with no pilot onboard. This “optionally piloted” configuration is unique to the Aurora version of the DA42M.

Aurora testing OPA-configured Diamond

The Centaur optionally piloted aircraft (OPA) prototype tests will characterise the airframe and power plant so the flight control system can be programmed appropriately for converting the Diamond 42M general aviation aircraft for unmanned use.

The combination of advanced avionics, efficient diesel engines and fully composite structure make the DA-42M a solid platform for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) flights. Centaur will support most commercial and military electro-optical and communication payloads with nose and belly pod modifications.

Aurora will wrap the flight control system into an auto pilot package in August, says Martin Gomez, Aurora's aerial robotics group manager. In September, the team will install it to fly with a human "safety pilot" on board before beginning a "lengthy period of testing that will probably take us through the winter," Gomez says. From there, Centaur will head into restricted airspace for fully unmanned testing.

Jagd der Dominator nun kurdische Separatisten?
The Israeli company (gemeint ist Aeronautics Defense Systems) has been flying an unmanned version of the Diamond DA42 light aircraft since June 2009, and is providing services with the so-called Dominator 2 under a lease agreement with the Turkish army.
Currently powered by two Thielert diesel engines, the 2,000kg Dominator 2 can carry a 300kg payload for missions lasting up to 28h. The aircraft can fly at an altitude up to 30,000ft, and has a maximum speed of 190kt (351km/h).
Aeronautics and Boeing signed a recent teaming agreement aimed at meeting the growing demand for medium-altitude, long-endurance UAVs. The US company's initial marketing efforts will be made in NATO member countries, plus Australia, Austria and Switzerland.

AUVSI: Aurora readies Centaur for flight

Aurora's Centaur OPA starts flight tests (1. Februar 2011)

Aurora Flight Sciences' Centaur optionally piloted aircraft (OPA) kicked off its flight test programme on 22 January from Manassas, Virginia, the company says. Two additional flights have already been conducted.

"The first flight served mainly to validate that all the hardware and software were working as planned," explains Washington. "Following a careful review of the data, we conducted a second flight on the 24th and a third flight on the 25th, during which all the basic UAV flight modes were turned on and carefully monitored. The initial results look fantastic."

Bild

Centaur will gradually expand its flight envelope over the next several months, leading to fully automatic take-offs and landings by late spring. The aircraft will then be fitted with an electro-optical payload and a high-bandwidth data link to demonstrate intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capability.

Aurora says it is currently taking orders for Centaur OPA for delivery in the second half of 2011.

Aeronautics launches production of unmanned Dominator (14. Februar 2011)

Israeli unmanned air vehicle manufacturer Aeronautics Defense Systems has launched the series production of its Dominator system, with negotiations on a sale under way with more than one potential customer.

"We hope to sign a contract very soon," says company president Avi Leumi.

Leumi says the Dominator is aimed at the high end of the medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV, competing directly with types such as the General Atomics Predator and Israel Aerospace Industries Heron.

The Aeronautics type is already in operational use with the Turkish army. Its lease arrangement sees the Israeli company's operators perform take-offs and landings and Turkish personnel control missions.

Aeronautics last year teamed up with Boeing to jointly offer MALE UAV services, with their initial marketing efforts to be made by the US partner in NATO member countries, plus Australia, Austria and Switzerland.

Aeronautics signs Dominator export deal

President of the Israeli company Avi Leumi confirmed that a contract was signed, but declined to identify the client.

The development came shortly after the Dominator XP was cleared for export by the Israeli defence ministry. Aeronautics' design had previously been adapted to comply with international Missile Technology Control Regime limitations to secure the approval.
